For ad videos, Instagram's Edits app is the best free start on a phone, and DaVinci Resolve is the best free desktop editor. Descript is quickest if you want to edit by editing text, and Runway adds AI video generation to editing.

## Edits by Instagram

Meta's launch post says Edits is free to download. The page lists a timeline with clip-level precision, auto-enhance, green screen and AI image animation, and exports with no watermark. It suits a quick vertical cut for Reels ads.

## DaVinci Resolve

Blackmagic's free version works with most 8-bit video formats at up to 60 frames per second and includes multi-user collaboration. Studio adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, which the page describes as deep neural networks for tasks such as smart reframing. The page showed Studio at $236, marked down from $295. It is a heavier tool to learn than a phone app.

## Descript

You edit video by editing a transcript. The paid plans list Underlord, its AI co-editor, plus Studio Sound and filler-word removal. Hobbyist includes 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month and exports 1080p without a watermark. Creator is $24/month billed yearly ($35 monthly), with 30 media hours and 4K export. Descript lists dubbed audio in 30 languages from Hobbyist up. Business adds translation proofreading.

## Runway

A video generation tool that also edits. Its pricing page lists Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 and Seedance 2.0 among its video models, and says Standard includes all of its video and image models. ## A worked example

Say you shoot 15 minutes of raw footage for each ad. Descript Hobbyist gives 10 media hours a month, which is 600 minutes. 600 / 15 = 40 ads a month before you reach the cap. If you make 12 ads a month, you use 12 x 15 = 180 minutes, or 3 hours, which is 30% of the cap. Watch the 400 AI credits in your first month as well, because clean-up tools spend them.
