For Facebook ads, pick an editor that exports H.264 MP4 and lets you set a size for each placement. DaVinci Resolve is the free desktop pick, Premiere Pro (now called Adobe Premiere) is a paid pick, and VN is a free phone pick.

## What Meta asks for

| Placement | Ratio | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Feed | 4:5 | 1440 x 1800 |
| Instagram Feed | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 |
| Reels and Stories | 9:16 | 1440 x 2560 |

Every placement wants H.264 video, square pixels, a fixed frame rate and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or more. Files can be MP4 or MOV, up to 4 GB. Meta recommends captions and sound. Source: [Meta's video ads guide](https://en-gb.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/video).

## DaVinci Resolve

The free version edits up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60 fps. Resolve 21 added square and vertical timeline sizes. Smart Reframe needs Studio. In India Studio is Rs 25,980 on sale until 20 Nov 2026 (list Rs 31,980, excluding GST; checked 3 Nov 2026). It takes longer to learn than a phone app.

## Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro reframes a finished edit with Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence. It makes a copy with the new ratio. Export with File > Export > Media and pick H.264. Adobe's India pages list different first-year offers, so read today's price on Adobe's page.

## VN and Edits

VN's manual export lets you pick resolution (480p to 4K), frame rate (24 to 60) and bitrate. VN says exporting needs no VN Pro. Edits by Instagram has no added watermark and shares straight to Instagram. Both are phone apps.

## Canva and CapCut

In Canva, choose Share > Download, then MP4 video, and set quality from 480p to 4K (4K on desktop only). Free accounts keep the default quality. Canva lists Magic Resize as a Pro feature.

CapCut has an auto reframe tool on desktop, listed as available in specific regions. CapCut is not officially available in India: it is not on the Indian App Store, and its pricing page shows no plans to visitors from India (checked 3 Nov 2026).

## A worked example

Say you run one 20-second ad on Facebook Feed and Reels. Edit once in 9:16 at 1440 x 2560. Meta asks you to keep about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side clear of text and logos on Reels and Stories. On 1440 x 2560, that is about 358 px at the top and 896 px at the bottom. Each side is about 86 px. These pixel figures are worked out from Meta's percentages. Then reframe a 4:5 copy at 1440 x 1800 for Feed. That is two exports from one edit.

## How to choose

1. Check the editor exports H.264 MP4 at the sizes in the first table.
2. Reframe one real ad and see if faces stay in frame.
3. Add captions, because Meta recommends them. See [how to add captions to video ads](/guides/how-to-add-captions-to-video-ads).
4. Confirm your plan exports with no watermark.

We make Marxx. Its [AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) runs in the browser. It has safe-zone overlays for Reels and Stories and an export preset for Meta ads. Its project sizes are 9:16, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:3, so for the Facebook Feed size in the first table, use another editor.

For the ad itself, read [how to make Reels ads](/guides/how-to-make-reels-ads). To fit one cut to several placements, see the [best tools to resize video for Instagram](/best/best-video-resizers-for-instagram).

## FAQ

### What size should a Facebook video ad be?

Meta recommends 1440 x 1800 (4:5) for Facebook Feed and 1440 x 2560 (9:16) for Reels and Stories. Its Instagram Feed page lists 1080 x 1920.

### Do Facebook video ads need captions?

Meta calls captions optional but recommended. Add them so the ad still works with the sound off.

### Which free editor has no watermark?

Edits by Instagram and VN both say their exports carry no watermark. Blackmagic's pages mention none for the free version of DaVinci Resolve.
