# Automatic Reel Makers: Can They Produce Ads That Convert?

> We checked how long auto-style montage ads actually run. Montages with an offer lasted months; mood montages lasted days. Here's what that means for auto reel makers.

An automatic reel maker does one thing very well. You give it clips or photos, and it cuts them to the beat of a song, adds transitions and hands back a finished montage. For an organic post, that's often all you need.

For an ad, we wanted to know whether that kind of video actually lasts. So we pulled Instagram video ads from the Marxx ad library that are built the same way, fast montages set to music, and checked how long brands kept paying for them.

The answer split cleanly in two.

Wilde Toyota montage live 232 days and Withnell Hyundai 164 days, next to a YETI mood montage that ran 2 days

## Same format, very different lifespans

Five montage ads: Wilde Toyota 232 days, Calgary 143 days, Withnell 164 days, Dave & Buster's 4 days, YETI 2 days

| Brand | What the montage says | Days live |
|---|---|---|
| Wilde Toyota | "Big discounts and great factory incentives" | **232**, still running |
| Withnell Hyundai | "9 used cars under $20,000" | **164**, still running |
| Calgary Megalot | Pre-owned cars, trucks and SUVs in stock | **143**, still running |
| Dave & Buster's | Fast cuts of food from the new menu | **4** |
| YETI | Action shots with one-word overlays | **1-2** per version |

The car dealers aren't running prettier videos than YETI or Dave & Buster's. They're running plainer ones. The difference is that every long runner puts a concrete reason to act inside the montage: a price ceiling, a discount, a stock count. The short-lived ones are built around a feeling.

An automatic reel maker will happily produce either. It can't tell you which one you need.

## The review: five automatic reel makers, judged as ad tools

We looked at each tool on the four things that matter once a reel becomes an ad: how fast it makes a cut, how easily you can put a claim on screen in the first second, how many variants you can make, and whether it outputs every placement size.

| Tool | Best at | Claim in second 1 | Variants | Placement sizes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Edits** (Meta) | Quick Instagram-native cuts, free | Manual text | One at a time | 9:16 |
| **CapCut** | Templates and beat-synced montages | Template text | One at a time | Manual resize |
| **Canva** | On-brand templates | Template text | Duplicate and edit | Resize tool (some features Pro) |
| **InVideo AI** | Turning a prompt into a stock-footage video | Script-led | Re-prompt | Several ratios |
| **Opus Clip** | Cutting long videos into short clips | Auto captions | Many clips from one source | Several ratios |

*Based on each tool's own product pages and third-party reviews as of October 2026. Features change often, so check before you rely on one.*

**Our view:** all five make a decent montage quickly. None of them starts by asking what the ad needs to say. If you already know your claim ("9 cars under $20,000"), any of them will put it on screen. If you don't, they'll give you a nice-looking mood piece, which in the data above is the kind of montage that gets switched off within days.

## When an automatic reel maker is enough

- You have a clear offer, price or stock number and need a quick montage to carry it.
- You're making organic content where mood is the point.
- You need one or two versions, not twenty.

## When it isn't

- You don't yet know which claim to lead with.
- You need five or ten versions with different openings to test.
- You need the same ad in 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1, published straight to Meta.

That's the gap the Marxx generation canvas covers. It starts with the hooks and offers that are lasting in your category, writes several opening lines from one brief, adds voice, an avatar or UGC-style talent if you want them, and outputs every placement size ready for Meta.

Marxx write node drafting hook variants from a brief

## A quick test before you publish any auto-made reel

Pause your reel on the first second and ask: if someone saw only this frame, would they know what you're offering? The Wilde Toyota and Withnell ads pass. The YETI and Dave & Buster's montages don't, and they were the first to go.
