Ask Claude or ChatGPT "why did my ROAS drop last week?" and you'll get a confident, well-written answer. It will cover creative fatigue, audience saturation and seasonality. It will also be a guess, because neither tool can see your ad account or your competitors' ads.

That's what most "Claude vs ChatGPT for marketing" comparisons miss. They test the models on blog posts, email copy and brand voice, where the difference is real but small. For **ad analysis**, the deciding factor isn't which model writes better. **It's what the model can see.**

So this guide does two things. It compares Claude and ChatGPT on the parts that matter to performance marketers, and it shows how to connect either one to real ad data so the answers stop being guesses.

## The short answer

- **Both are strong analysts.** For reading a CSV export, spotting patterns and writing up findings, either one will do the job well.
- **Neither can see your ads by default.** Without a data connection, every answer about your account or your competitors is general advice.
- **Both can connect to ad data through MCP**, the open standard for plugging tools into AI assistants. The setup differs slightly (details below).
- **Pick the one your team already uses**, then connect your ad data. That step changes the answers far more than the choice of model.

Same question, two answers: a generic answer without data vs a specific answer using Marxx ad data

## Claude vs ChatGPT: what matters for ad work

| What you need | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Analysing exported reports (CSV, XLSX) | ✅ Strong | ✅ Strong |
| Long documents (briefs, audits, transcripts) | ✅ Strong, known for long context | ✅ Strong |
| Writing ad copy and hook variants | ✅ | ✅ |
| Connecting to live data via MCP | ✅ Custom connectors on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise | ✅ Developer mode (beta) on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu |
| Where you add a custom MCP server | Settings -> Connectors | Settings -> Apps -> Advanced -> Developer mode |
| Per-chat setup | Connector stays available once added | You select the app in each new chat |
| Team sharing | Team and Enterprise plans | Business and Enterprise plans |

*Plan availability is from Anthropic's and third-party documentation as of October 2026 and changes often. Check the current docs before you buy.*

**Our take:** for ad analysis, these are close enough that the decision should come down to what your team already pays for and how you like to work. The table above shows the practical differences. What it can't show is the bigger gap between *either* tool with your data and *either* tool without it.

## Why "what it can see" beats "which model"

Here's a question a performance marketer might ask about a competitor:

> "What is Wonderla backing in its ads right now, and what should I test?"

**Without ad data**, both assistants give a reasonable-sounding answer about theme parks in general: seasonal offers, family imagery, try UGC. There's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing specific either.

**With the Marxx MCP server connected**, the assistant pulls Wonderla's actual ads and decodes them. This is the real answer from Marxx data in October 2026:

Wonderla's hook types: share of ads vs average days each ad stays live

- Offer and price hooks are **64% of Wonderla's ads**, but each one lasts about **15 days**.
- Problem-solution hooks are only **2% of ads**, but stay live **34 days**, 2.3 times longer.
- The longest runner is a corporate group ad, "Break out of boredrooms", at **60 days**.
- A question-hook carousel was copied across **3 cities** and ran for **45 days**.

Wonderla's longest-running ads with their decoded tags

**The recommendation:** test a problem-led corporate offsite campaign, and don't copy the BOGO banners. (We walk through this example in full in our [PPC competitive analysis template](/blog/ppc-competitive-analysis).)

It's the same question, and the model makes much less difference than the data does.

## What you can ask once your ads are connected

These are the kinds of questions that become useful once Claude or ChatGPT can read your ad data through Marxx:

| Job | Ask |
|---|---|
| Competitor teardown | "What has [competitor] been running longest, and what hooks does it use?" |
| What's working in your category | "Which hooks are rising in my sector, and which are declining?" |
| Gaps | "Which hook types do my competitors run that I don't?" |
| Fatigue | "Which of my ads are fading, and what should replace them?" (see [what Meta tells you vs what to buy](/blog/ad-testing-software)) |
| Briefs | "Write 5 hook variants for my next test based on what my competitors are backing." |
| Weekly report | "Summarise last week's performance and competitor launches for my client." |

Every answer comes back with the ads attached: thumbnails, hooks, how long each ad has been live, and the tags behind the claim.

## How to add the Marxx MCP server

### In Claude

1. Open **Settings -> Connectors**.
2. Add a custom connector and paste the Marxx MCP server URL (you'll find it in your Marxx workspace settings).
3. Sign in to Marxx when prompted.
4. Start a new chat and ask a question about your ads or competitors.

Custom connectors are available on Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

### In ChatGPT

1. Open **Settings -> Apps -> Advanced settings** and turn on **Developer mode**.
2. Click **Create app** and paste the Marxx MCP server URL.

## Things to watch

- **Check which client you're asking about.** Agencies with several clients should confirm the workspace before trusting an answer.
- **Read-only first.** Start with questions. Only enable tools that change campaigns once your team is comfortable, and keep the approval step on.
- **Treat days live as a signal, not proof.** It's the best public sign that a competitor ad works, but brands also pause ads for budget or seasonal reasons.
- **Don't paste client data into a chat with no connector** if your agreements don't allow it. A connected tool keeps the data where it already lives.

## FAQ

**Is Claude or ChatGPT better for marketing?**
For writing, both are strong, and preferences come down to tone and workflow. For ad analysis, the bigger difference is whether the assistant is connected to your ad data.

**Can Claude or ChatGPT read my Meta ads?**
Not on their own. They need a connection to the data, through an MCP server like Marxx or an exported report.

**What is an MCP server?**
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call external tools and data. An MCP server like Marxx gives Claude or ChatGPT access to your ads, your competitors' ads and creative tags.

**Do I need a paid plan?**
Yes. Custom MCP connectors need Claude Pro or higher, or ChatGPT Plus or higher with developer mode.

**Can I use both?**
Yes. The same Marxx MCP server works in both, so different team members can use whichever they prefer.

## Connect your ads to Claude or ChatGPT

Add the Marxx MCP server and ask about your ads, your competitors and what to test next, all from the assistant you already use. Every answer comes with the actual ads behind it.
