Here's the case. A rival amusement park has gone quiet in your market and loud on Meta. You want to know what it's planning for the season. Your budget is INR 0 and you have one evening.

The rival is Wonderla. On 16 October 2026 it had more than 500 ads live on Meta. Your only help is six free tools, which we'll treat as witnesses: each saw part of what happened, and each has a point where it can't tell you any more.

This is what they said, and what they missed.

An evidence board with four Wonderla ads pinned up and notes: case Wonderla, budget INR 0, tools free; 500+ ads, 4 creatives, 35-44 copies each

## The witness statements

Six free tools as witnesses, each with what it can tell you and what it can't

### Witness 1: Meta Ad Library

The most useful witness by far. It shows every ad Wonderla is running on Facebook and Instagram, and the date each one started. Scroll for ten minutes and you'll notice a lot of the same offer: Buy 3, Get 1 Free.

**Where it stops:** it shows you 500 ads in a row with no way to sort them by what matters. It sometimes groups identical ads together, but not consistently, so you can't easily tell which creatives Wonderla has scaled and which are one-off tests. And outside the EU and UK, most commercial ads disappear from the library once they stop running.

### Witness 2: Google Ads Transparency Center

It shows Wonderla's Search, YouTube and Display ads, which Meta's library doesn't cover.

**Where it stops:** it's a separate world. To connect what Wonderla says on Google with what it runs on Meta, you'll need a spreadsheet.

### Witness 3: TikTok Creative Center

It knows what's trending in ads on TikTok and which formats are popular in a category.

**Where it stops:** it's built for trends, not for following one named competitor.

### Witness 4: Google Keyword Planner

It tells you which searches exist around your category and roughly how many people make them.

**Where it stops:** it can't tell you whether Wonderla is bidding on them.

### Witness 5: SpyFu (free searches)

It gives you a first look at a competitor's paid keywords.

**Where it stops:** most of the detail is behind the paid plan.

### Witness 6: BigSpy (free tier)

It lets you browse ads across several platforms in one place.

**Where it stops:** the free tier runs out of searches quickly.

## Where the evening ran out

Put the six statements together and you can answer three questions well: is Wonderla advertising, what is it running, and since when. You can partly answer a fourth: how many versions of each ad exist.

Eight questions about one competitor: the first three free, the fourth partly, the last four not free

The next questions are the ones that actually matter for your plan: which hooks and offers dominate, what changed this week, what was dropped, and how search and social fit together. Free tools can't answer them, because answering them means reading and labelling every ad yourself.

Tagging 500 Wonderla ads by hand: 500+ ads, about a minute each, over 8 hours for one competitor

At about a minute per ad, that's more than eight hours for one competitor, once. Your evening is over before you're a fifth of the way through.

## What the witnesses missed

Here's what the full picture looks like, from the Marxx ad library on 16 October:

What the free witnesses missed: four Wonderla creatives with 44, 41, 36 and 35 near-identical copies, all selling the Buy 3, Get 1 Free offer and live since 9 July

Most of those 500 ads are copies of four creatives. All four sell the same Buy 3, Get 1 Free offer, and all four have been live since 9 July, with 35 to 44 near-identical versions each, spread across cities and placements. One of them leads with a boredom hook (an illustrated family stuck on the sofa) rather than the offer, which tells you Wonderla is also testing a different way into the same deal.

That's the answer to the case: one bundle offer, scaled for the season, with a couple of different hooks in front of it. If you manage a competing park, that's what you need to respond to.

## Should you pay?

Not necessarily. If you check two or three competitors once a month and only need to know what they're running, the free stack is enough. Start with the Meta Ad Library and look at start dates. That's the most underused free signal there is.

Paying makes sense when you need the later questions answered every month: more than a few rivals, across Meta and Google, tagged by hook and offer, with alerts when something launches or scales. That's what Marxx does.

## FAQ

**What's the best free ad spy tool?**
The Meta Ad Library. It covers every live Facebook and Instagram ad and shows when each one started.

**Can free tools show a competitor's ad spend?**
No. For most commercial ads, neither Meta nor Google publishes spend. How long an ad has run and how many copies exist are the best public signals.

**How do I spot which competitor ads are working, for free?**
Sort by start date in the Meta Ad Library and look for ads that have been running for months, then check whether the same creative appears many times.
