# AI Ad Analysis Models: Why General LLMs Misread Ads

> Can ChatGPT analyze ads? One ad at a time, yes. Here's what general LLMs miss, shown with a real Wonderla ad, and when you need a dedicated decode.

Yes, ChatGPT can analyze an ad. Upload a screenshot and it will tell you who it's aimed at, what the hook is and how the design could be improved. Claude and Gemini will do the same, and the answers are often good.

The trouble starts when you try to use those answers to make decisions. A general model sees one image, out of context, and describes it fresh every time. Performance marketing needs something else: the same labels applied to every ad, and some sense of which ads a brand is actually putting money behind.

Here's a real example of the difference.

A Wonderla ad shown alone as a bored family on a sofa, next to the full decode: curiosity hook, boredom problem, awareness objective, Buy 3 get 1 free copy, 99 days live, 35 copies

## One Wonderla ad, two readings

The image above is the first card of a Wonderla carousel. A family sits on a sofa looking bored, and a thought bubble says "I want to try something out of this world!"

Look at that image on its own and the obvious reading is a lifestyle or awareness ad about escaping boredom. That reading isn't wrong. It's just incomplete.

This is what the same ad looks like in the Marxx ad library, 16 October 2026:

| | |
|---|---|
| Hook | Curiosity: "I want to try something out of this world!" |
| Problem | Boredom and routine |
| Emotion | Boredom |
| Ad type | Illustration, carousel |
| Objective | Awareness |
| Body copy | "Buy 3 ride tickets and enjoy 1 absolutely free." |
| Live | 99 days, since 9 July |
| Copies | 35 near-identical versions running |

Two things change the meaning. The body copy carries the same Buy 3, Get 1 Free offer as Wonderla's other top ads, so this isn't a separate brand campaign. It's the bundle offer with a boredom hook in front of it. And it has been running for over three months in 35 versions, so Wonderla isn't testing this angle any more. It's scaling it.

None of that is visible in the image.

## Three things a chat window can't see

Three gaps: spend signals, a fixed set of labels, the whole ad

**1. Spend signals.** Nobody outside a company can see its ROAS. The best public signals are how long an ad has run and how many copies of it are live. A general model looking at a screenshot has neither, so it can't tell a two-day test from a three-month bet.

**2. A fixed set of labels.** If you ask a chat assistant to describe the hook of 50 ads, you'll get 50 well-written descriptions in slightly different words. That's fine for reading, but you can't count them, sort them or compare this month with last month. For that, every ad needs the same fields filled in from the same list of values.

**3. The whole ad.** A screenshot usually shows one frame. The rest of the carousel, the video after the first three seconds, the body copy and the landing page are often where the offer is. In the Wonderla example, the offer was only in the copy.

## When a general LLM is enough

You don't need a specialised tool for everything. ChatGPT or Claude is a good choice when you:

- want feedback on a single draft before it goes live;
- need copy variations or a rewrite of a headline;
- are analysing a CSV export you already have.

It's the wrong tool when you need to compare many ads, track a competitor over time, or decide what to test next based on what's working in your category.

You can also connect ChatGPT or Claude to real ad data through MCP, which closes much of the gap. We covered how in [Claude vs ChatGPT for marketing](/blog/claude-vs-chatgpt-for-marketing).

## What Marxx decodes on every ad

Every ad in Marxx, yours and your competitors', is broken down into the same 16 attributes:

| Message | Format | Proof and context |
|---|---|---|
| Hook type | Ad type | Social proof |
| Problem statement | Scene | Authenticity |
| Feature or benefit | Background music | Reliability |
| Offer | Language | Campaign objective |
| Emotion | CTA | Product |
| Audience | | |

Because the labels are fixed, you can ask questions a chat window can't answer from screenshots: which hook types a competitor has kept running longest, which emotions are rising in your category, or which of your own ads share the same weak opening.

## Try it yourself

Take one competitor ad you know has been running for months. Paste only the first frame into ChatGPT and ask what the ad is selling and whether it's working. Then look at the full ad, its copy and how long it's been live. Compare the two answers.
