The day-by-day customs are from Wikipedia and BankBazaar. Sunset and sunrise times differ by city, so check a local panchang before you name a time. In 2027, Dekho Panchang lists Thursday 4 November and BankBazaar lists 2 to 5 November, so the festival moves earlier.

People celebrate it mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Shubh Panchang also names Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat and Bengaluru, where migrant families keep it.

Offerings are strictly vegetarian and cooked without salt, onion or garlic. Wikipedia lists thekua, rasabali, kasar laddoo, sugarcane, sweet lime, coconut, banana and other fruit in small bamboo baskets, and lamps lit under a sugarcane frame.
