Makar Sankranti 2027 falls on **Thursday 14 January** per Dekho Panchang, but Drik Panchang lists **Friday 15 January**, because the Sun enters Capricorn at 9:14 PM on 14 January (checked 2026-10-20). The same days carry Pongal, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu, and Lohri falls just before, so write regional ads, not one national ad.

## The dates

| Year | Makar Sankranti |
|---|---|
| 2026 (done) | Wednesday 14 January |
| 2027 | Thursday 14 January (Dekho Panchang) or Friday 15 January (Drik Panchang) |

Sources: [Dekho Panchang](https://dekhopanchang.com/en/festivals/makar-sankranti/2027) for 14 January 2027, and [Drik Panchang](https://www.drikpanchang.com/festivals/pongal/thai-pongal-date-time.html?year=2027), which puts the Sankranti moment at 9:14 PM on 14 January 2027 and lists the festival on 15 January. For 2026, the [Drik Panchang page](https://www.drikpanchang.com/festivals/pongal/thai-pongal-date-time.html?year=2026) gives the Sankranti moment as 3:13 PM on 14 January. Lohri falls on the night before Maghi, which is linked to Sankranti, and commonly on 13 January ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lohri)).

## What each region does

| Region | Festival | What buyers do |
|---|---|---|
| Gujarat | Uttarayan | Kite flying, chikki, undhiyu |
| Punjab | Lohri | Bonfires, sesame, jaggery, rewri |
| Tamil Nadu | Pongal | Four days. See [Pongal ad ideas](/campaigns/pongal-ad-ideas) |
| Assam | Magh (Bhogali) Bihu | Community feasts and bonfires |
| Maharashtra | Til-gul exchange | Sesame and jaggery sweets, haldi-kumkum gatherings |

Customs vary by family and city, so check with local customers before you copy a template.

## A timing plan for 2027

| When | What to run |
|---|---|
| From mid-December | Teasers: winter wear, kites, til-gul and gift boxes |
| 1 to 8 January | Main push, with delivery-by dates |
| 9 to 12 January | Last orders and local delivery |
| Wednesday 13 January | Lohri evening greetings |
| 14 and 15 January | Greetings only. No hard sell |
| After | Move to a [Republic Day](/campaigns/republic-day-ad-ideas) sale on 26 January |

## Angles that fit

- **Harvest and warmth:** sweets, winter wear, home cooking
- **Sky and play:** kite kits and rooftop gatherings
- **Gifting:** til-gul boxes for neighbours and family
- **Fresh start:** a follow-up to your [New Year](/campaigns/new-year-ad-ideas) goals

## A regional budget split

Say you have INR 50,000 and last year's orders came 40% from Gujarat, 25% from Punjab, 20% from Maharashtra and 15% from elsewhere. Spend INR 20,000 on Gujarat, INR 12,500 on Punjab, INR 10,000 on Maharashtra and INR 7,500 on the rest. Write each ad in the local language. For Hindi belts, see [ad copy examples in Hindi](/templates/ad-copy-examples-in-hindi).

## Mistakes to avoid

- One date in the ad, when two are in use
- One festival name for the whole country
- Kite-flying images that ignore safety on rooftops
- A flat "sale" message with no sweets, warmth or family in it

## FAQ

### When is Makar Sankranti in 2027?

Thursday 14 January per Dekho Panchang, or Friday 15 January per Drik Panchang. Lohri is the night before Maghi, commonly 13 January.

### Is Pongal the same day as Makar Sankranti?

Thai Pongal 2027 is Friday 15 January per Drik Panchang, so the two overlap. Pongal runs for four days in Tamil Nadu.

Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Assam each keep the festival in their own way. Run separate ads by language.
