Ad copy is the words in your ad: the main text, headline and button. Ad creative is the picture or video people see, and many marketers also use it for the whole ad. When a media buyer says "the creative is tired", they mean the visual and the idea. Test creative first, because it is usually what makes someone stop and read your copy.

## Side by side

| | Ad copy | Ad creative |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Text: primary text, headline, description, button label | Image, video or carousel, and the idea behind it |
| Main job | Explain, convince, ask for the click | Stop the scroll, show the product |
| Seen | Often after the visual | Often first |
| Test with | Rewriting one line at a time | Changing the angle, format or first seconds |
| Judge by | Click-through rate, cost per click | Hook rate, hold rate, cost per purchase |
| Who makes it | Copywriter or marketer | Designer, editor, creator |

Some teams say "creative" for everything in the ad, words included. Agree on the meaning inside your team so briefs do not cross wires.

## The first three seconds

On a feed or in Reels, the visual and the first line of any spoken words or on-screen text get a moment of attention. The [hook](/glossary/ad-hook) lives there. It can be the creative (a striking shot), the copy (a bold first line) or both. Learn what makes one in [how to write ad hooks](/guides/how-to-write-ad-hooks).

## A worked example

Say you sell a INR 1,299 water bottle and test for a week at INR 2,000 a day per variant.

**Test A, copy only.** Same video, three different headlines.

| Headline | Spend | Purchases | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | INR 14,000 | 18 | INR 778 |
| A2 | INR 14,000 | 20 | INR 700 |
| A3 | INR 14,000 | 19 | INR 737 |

The best is 10% cheaper than the worst. That is a small win.

**Test B, creative only.** Same headline, three different videos.

| Video | Spend | Purchases | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| B1: unboxing | INR 14,000 | 12 | INR 1,167 |
| B2: gym bag test | INR 14,000 | 24 | INR 583 |
| B3: office desk | INR 14,000 | 21 | INR 667 |

The best is half the cost of the worst. These numbers are made up. In this example, the creative moves results far more than the headline. Check whether that holds in your own account. Once a creative works, sharpen the copy.

## What to do in order

1. **Pick the angle.** The reason someone should care. See [what an ad angle is](/glossary/ad-angle).
2. **Make 3 to 5 genuinely different creatives.** Different angles and formats, not colour swaps. Read about [creative diversity](/glossary/creative-diversity).
3. **Find the winner.** Keep the copy the same while you do.
4. **Then test copy.** Change one line at a time.
5. **Name your ads clearly,** so you can tell later what you changed. Use an [ad naming convention](/templates/ad-naming-convention-template).

## Common mistakes

- Changing copy and creative together, so you cannot tell which helped
- Calling a colour change a new creative
- Writing long copy to rescue a weak visual

For help with the words, see [50 ad hook examples](/templates/ad-hook-examples). If you want to see which hooks, angles, faces and scenes your account has already run, Marxx tags the creative in your connected ad accounts that way. We make Marxx, so weigh that.

## FAQ

### Is ad copy part of ad creative?

Sometimes. Many teams use "creative" for the visual and "copy" for the words, and others use "creative" for the whole ad. Pick one meaning for your team.

### Should I test copy or creative first?

Creative first. It changes who stops to look, and the copy only works on people who do.
