# Meta Ad Library vs a competitor tracking tool

> The Meta Ad Library is free and you search it yourself. A tracking tool watches it for you and sends new ads. What each does, time cost and when to switch.

Use the Meta Ad Library on its own if you watch a few rivals for one brand and can search each week. Add a competitor tracking tool when you watch many brands or many clients, because the tool checks for you, keeps what it finds, and sends you what is new. Both see the same public ads: neither shows a rival's spend or results.

## Side by side

| | Meta Ad Library | Competitor tracking tool |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Paid, varies by tool |
| How you get new ads | You search, brand by brand | New ads come to you, often as a digest |
| Ads after they stop | Most disappear from view | Many tools keep what they collected |
| History of a brand | Active ads, plus start dates | A record built up over time |
| Organising | None, you screenshot or bookmark | Boards, tags, saved lists |
| Many clients | Separate searches each time | Competitor lists kept per client |
| Platforms | Meta only | Depends on the tool, some add Google or TikTok |
| Spend and results | Not shown for ordinary ads | Not shown either. Same public source |

Meta's library facts are from Meta's own help, as summarised in [what the Meta Ad Library is](/glossary/meta-ad-library).

## Three differences that matter

### 1. Who does the checking

The library waits for you. A tool comes to you. That sounds small until you count it. Say you track 6 rivals for each of 4 clients. That is 24 searches a week. At 3 minutes each, you spend 72 minutes a week, about 5 hours a month, before anyone looks at an ad closely. A tool's digest cuts that to reading time.

### 2. What you keep

For most advertisers, the Meta Ad Library shows only active ads. When a rival stops an ad, it drops out of view. If you did not save it, it is gone for you. Tracking tools generally keep what they have collected, so you can look back at a rival's spring sale in the autumn. A [swipe file](/glossary/swipe-file) does the same job by hand.

### 3. Keeping clients apart

An agency needs each client's rivals in one place, separate from every other client's. In the library, that lives in your head or a spreadsheet. Tools built for agencies keep a competitor list per client, and some post each client's new rival ads into that client's own channel.

## When the library is enough

- One brand, three to five close rivals
- Someone has 20 minutes a week to search
- You only advertise on Meta

Learn the searches in [how to search the Meta Ad Library by keyword](/guides/how-to-search-the-meta-ad-library-by-keyword).

## When to add a tool

- More than one client, or more than ten rivals
- Rivals also run Google ads, which the Meta library does not show
- You keep losing good ads because they stopped before you saved them
- The team wants new ads where they already talk, such as Slack

Marxx tracks competitor ads on Meta and Google and posts new ones in each client's Slack channel, with a **Save** button on each ad. We make Marxx. See [competitor tracking](/features/competitor-tracking).

## FAQ

### Does a competitor tracking tool see more than the Meta Ad Library?

Not for Meta ads. Tools read the same public data. They add checking, keeping and organising, and some add other platforms.

### Can either one show competitor ad spend?

No, not for ordinary ads. Meta shows spend ranges only for social issue, election and political ads.

### Is the Meta Ad Library really free?

Yes. Anyone can search it without a Facebook account or an ad account.
