Advantage+ audience treats your targeting as a starting point. Meta shows the ad to those people first, then to others it expects to respond. Original audience options treat your targeting as a fence. Use Advantage+ audience by default, and switch to original options when you need a strict audience or a clean test.

## What Meta says each one does

Meta describes Advantage+ audience as taking your usual audience choices and expanding past them. Your custom audiences, lookalikes, age, gender and detailed targeting become suggestions. Meta gives priority to people who match them, then looks wider when that is likely to improve results (checked 20 Oct 2026, from [Meta's Advantage+ audience page](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads/meta-advantage-plus/audience)).

Original audience options are the older setup. Your choices decide who can see the ad.

Meta applies Advantage+ audience to new campaigns when it is available, unless you create an Advantage+ sales campaign. To go back, choose **Switch to original audience options** in the ad set.

## Side by side

| | Advantage+ audience | Original audience options |
|---|---|---|
| Your targeting is | A suggestion | A limit |
| Meta can go beyond it | Yes, when it expects better results | No |
| Hard limits you can still set | Location, minimum age, languages, custom audience exclusions | Everything you pick |
| Best for | Scaling, wide offers, steady purchase data | Strict audiences, clean audience tests |
| Main risk | Some spend goes outside your ideal buyer | A small audience that costs more per result |

The hard limits are Meta's "audience controls". Meta says these are the criteria its AI should not expand beyond.

## A worked example

Say you sell a INR 1,899 face serum and spend INR 3,000 a day on a sales campaign for 7 days. You add a lookalike of past buyers and the interest "skincare" as suggestions. You set location to India and minimum age to 21 as controls.

| | Advantage+ audience | Original audience options |
|---|---|---|
| Spend | INR 21,000 | INR 21,000 |
| Purchases | 38 | 31 |
| Cost per purchase | INR 553 | INR 677 |

These numbers are made up. In this case Advantage+ audience wins by INR 124 per purchase. Run the test again for a second week before you act. One week is a small sample. Compare [cost per acquisition](/glossary/cpa), not only ROAS.

## When to switch to original options

- You sell only to one group, and spend outside it is waste.
- You are testing one audience against another and need each to stay inside its fence.
- You need to keep a list of people out. Meta lists custom audience exclusions among its audience controls, so set them whichever way you run.
- Your pixel has almost no purchase data, so Meta has little to learn from.

## When to keep Advantage+ audience

- You get steady purchases each week and your tracking is sound.
- You have several genuinely different ads. Creative guides who sees each ad.
- You want Meta to find buyers you did not think of.

Whichever you use, each ad set still needs enough results to leave the [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase).

## FAQ

### Does Advantage+ audience ignore my targeting?

No. Meta starts with the people you suggested and gives them priority. It then looks wider when that is likely to improve performance.

### Can I stop Meta from showing ads outside my location?

Yes. Location is one of the audience controls, and Meta treats controls as limits it should not expand beyond.

### Is Advantage+ audience the same as broad targeting?

Close, but not the same. [Broad targeting](/glossary/broad-targeting) uses only basic limits. Advantage+ audience lets you add suggestions that Meta can use and go beyond.
