Hire a freelancer when you need one skill done well, such as running Meta ads or editing videos. Hire an agency when you need several skills at once and cannot afford a gap when one person is ill or leaves. The fee matters less than what is included, so add up the whole month before you compare.

## Side by side

| | Freelancer | Agency |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Lower for one skill | Higher, but covers several |
| Skills | Usually one or two | Media buying, creative, reporting, strategy |
| If the person is ill or leaves | Work stops | Someone else covers |
| Who you talk to | The person doing the work | An account manager, then the team |
| Speed to start | Fast | Slower, with onboarding |
| Best for | Small budgets, one clear gap | Growing budgets, many moving parts |
| Main risk | You become the manager | You pay for layers you do not need |

## A worked example

Say you spend INR 4 lakh a month on Meta ads. These numbers are made up, so swap in your own quotes.

**Three freelancers:**

| Role | Monthly fee |
|---|---|
| Media buyer | INR 40,000 |
| Video editor | INR 30,000 |
| UGC creator briefs and shoots | INR 25,000 |
| **Total** | **INR 95,000** |

You also spend about 6 hours a week briefing and joining them up.

**One agency:** INR 1,10,000 a month for media buying, creative direction and a weekly report.

The agency costs INR 15,000 more. In return you save about 24 hours a month of your own time and get cover when someone is away. If your time is worth more than INR 625 an hour, the agency is cheaper in practice. If you would rather pick each person yourself, the freelancers win.

## Questions to ask either one

1. Will the ad account be in my name? It should be. Never hand over ownership.
2. Who owns the creative files when we stop?
3. What goes in the [weekly report](/templates/weekly-ad-report-template), and who reads it with me?
4. How do you name ads and test ideas? A good answer follows a system like an [ad naming convention](/templates/ad-naming-convention-template).
5. What is the notice period?

## Signs you picked right

- You can explain last week's results in two sentences after reading the report.
- Someone owns creative strategy, not only media buying. See what a [creative strategist](/glossary/creative-strategist) does.
- Tests have a plan: one change at a time, with a stated reason.

## A middle path

Many brands start with one freelancer, then move to an agency when budget and complexity grow. Others keep a freelancer for media buying and use creators for content, which you brief with a clear [UGC brief](/guides/how-to-brief-ugc-creators). If you are weighing a salaried hire next, read [agency vs in-house team](/compare/agency-vs-in-house-team).

If you are the freelancer or agency, Marxx gives each client an isolated workspace, priced per workspace with unlimited seats. See [Marxx for agencies](/for/agencies). We make Marxx, so weigh that.

## FAQ

### Is a freelancer always cheaper than an agency?

For one skill, usually yes. Once you need three or four skills, the total can match or pass an agency fee, and you carry the management time.

### Who should own the ad account?

You should. Add the agency or freelancer as a partner with the access they need, so you keep the account if you part ways.
