---

Broad targeting gives Meta only basic limits, such as location and age, and lets your ad and your past results find the buyers. Interest targeting limits delivery to people Meta links to the interests you pick. Start broad when your account has steady purchases and varied ads. Use interests when you are new or sell to a narrow group, and always test the two against each other.

## Side by side

| | Broad targeting | Interest targeting |
|---|---|---|
| You set | Location, maybe age | Location plus interests or behaviours |
| Who finds the buyer | Meta, guided by your ad and your data | You, then Meta inside your list |
| Audience size | Very large | Smaller |
| Best when | Pixel has purchases, ads are varied | New pixel, niche product, small budget |
| Main risk | Slow start with weak data | Pays more for a small audience |
| What matters most | Creative | Creative and the interest list |

## Two things that changed

1. **Meta treats your choices as hints more often.** With [Advantage+ audience](/compare/advantage-plus-audience-vs-original-audience), Meta takes your targeting as suggestions and can show the ad beyond them (checked 20 Oct 2026, from [Meta's Advantage+ audience page](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads/meta-advantage-plus/audience)).
2. **Meta is removing some interest options.** Its help centre has a page called "Updates to detailed targeting", which says Meta is discontinuing some detailed targeting options (checked 20 Oct 2026, [Meta Business Help Centre](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/458835214668072)). An interest you rely on may disappear, so do not build everything on one list.

## Why creative matters more with broad

On broad targeting, your ad does the targeting. Meta's system picks the ads that could be shown to each person before it ranks them. A UGC video about acne and a gifting image reach different people in the same audience. Read how this works in [Meta Andromeda](/glossary/meta-andromeda). Real variety means a new angle, face or format. See [creative diversity](/glossary/creative-diversity).

## A worked example

Say you sell a INR 1,299 yoga mat and test for 10 days at INR 2,500 a day per ad set, with the same four ads.

| | Interest: yoga, fitness | Broad: India, 22 to 45 |
|---|---|---|
| Spend | INR 25,000 | INR 25,000 |
| Purchases | 41 | 48 |
| Cost per purchase | INR 610 | INR 521 |
| Share of buyers who were new | 71% | 83% |

These numbers are made up. Here broad wins by INR 89 per purchase and brings more new customers. The result can flip. A brand with 30 purchases a month and one product may see interests win at first. Run the same test every few months.

## How to run the test fairly

1. Use the same ads, budget and dates in both ad sets.
2. Exclude past buyers in both ad sets, or in neither.
3. Give each at least a week, so it can pass the [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase).
4. Judge by cost per new customer, not only by click cost. Read about [CPA](/glossary/cpa).

## When interests still help

- A new account with almost no purchase history
- A product only a small group buys, such as a specialist tool
- A tiny budget that cannot afford a slow start

## FAQ

### Is broad targeting better than interest targeting?

Often it is for accounts with steady purchases and varied ads. For new or niche accounts, interests can start faster. Test both with the same ads and budget.

### Does broad targeting mean anyone can see my ad?

No. You still set location and any age limit. Meta then picks from the people inside those limits.
