You need both. The Meta Pixel reports events from the shopper's browser. The Conversions API (CAPI) reports the same events from your server, so they still reach Meta when the browser blocks the pixel. Together, with deduplication, Meta sees more of your real sales.

## Side by side

| | Meta Pixel | Conversions API |
|---|---|---|
| Runs in | The visitor's browser | Your server or platform |
| Blocked by ad blockers | Often | No |
| Setup | Paste a code or install an app | An app, a gateway or developer work |
| Sends | Page views, clicks, purchases | Purchases, leads, offline events, more customer details |
| Alone, it misses | Blocked and closed-page events | Some browser-only signals |

## How they work together

Both send the same purchase with the same **event name** and **event ID**. Meta keeps one and drops the duplicate. Without matching IDs, you double count sales.

## A worked example

Say a store makes 500 sales in a week.

- Pixel only: Meta records 360.
- Pixel and CAPI, deduplicated: Meta records 470.

Meta now learns from 110 more buyers. Ads Manager's cost per purchase also looks lower, because more real sales are counted.

## How to check your setup

1. Open **Events Manager**, go to **Data sources** and pick your pixel or dataset, then open **Overview**.
2. Look at **Purchase**. Under **Connection method** it should show both browser and server.
3. Click **Event details** for Purchase and open the **Event deduplication** tab to see the deduplication rate.
4. Check **Event Match Quality**, scored from 1 to 10. Sending hashed email and phone usually raises it.

## FAQ

### Can I use only the Conversions API?

You can, but Meta recommends running the Conversions API alongside the pixel (checked 2026-10-20). The pixel captures browser signals that help Meta optimise.

### Is CAPI hard to set up?

On Shopify and WooCommerce it is a few clicks with the official apps. Custom sites need a developer or Meta's gateway.
