Pick Birch if you know the rules you want, such as "pause any ad set that spends this much with no result", and want software to apply them every 15 minutes. Pick Runneth if you want an AI teammate to read your Meta and TikTok ads, answer questions in Slack and spot what to do next.

## Rules versus an agent

The two tools act in different ways.

- **A rule** is an if-then instruction you write. Birch checks it every 15 minutes and acts the same way every time. It never acts outside what you wrote.
- **An agent** reads the account, reasons about it and replies in plain words. Runneth is trained on your team's judgement and works 24/7 on its own cloud computer. It reads by default and only launches ads once an owner or admin allows it.

Rules are predictable. An agent handles questions you did not think to write a rule for.

## A worked example: the same problem, two ways

Say your target cost per lead is INR 400, and one Meta ad set spent INR 2,000 yesterday with no lead.

**With Birch,** you write the rule once: if an ad set spends INR 2,000 in a day with no lead, pause it. Birch checks every 15 minutes. At the next check after spend crosses INR 2,000, it pauses the ad set.

**With Runneth,** you ask in the team channel: "@Runneth which ad sets spent over INR 2,000 yesterday without a lead, and why?" It replies in the thread. It might point out that the ad set started only yesterday, which a fixed rule would not weigh. If you have allowed it to pause live ads, it can act. If not, a person does.

## Three differences that matter

1. **Predictability.** Birch does exactly what the rule says. Runneth uses judgement, which helps with unusual cases and needs trust.
2. **Platforms.** Birch covers Google and Snapchat as well as Meta and TikTok. Runneth's core is Meta and TikTok.
3. **Price.** Birch starts at $49 a month. Runneth starts at $999, with unlimited seats and its own always-on machine.

## Which to pick

- **Clear rules, tight budget, four platforms:** Birch.
- **Questions that change every week, heavy Meta and TikTok spend:** Runneth.
- **Both:** some teams run rules for safety and an agent for analysis.

We make Marxx. Its alerts land in each client's Slack channel, with Snooze 7 days and Turn off this alert buttons, and @Marxx answers questions there. It never changes ads from Slack. See [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack).
