An ad concept is one complete creative idea for an ad. It says who the ad speaks to, the reason they should care (the angle), how it opens (the hook) and what it looks like (the format). Two ads are different concepts when the idea is different, not just the wording.

## Concept or variant?

| | Concept | Variant |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | The whole idea | One detail |
| Example | "A mum tests the purifier with a smoke stick" | Same video, new first line |
| Tests | Which idea works | Which detail works |
| Count per month | A few new ones | Several per winner |

Test concepts first. Then make variants of the one that wins.

## A one-line template

For **[who]**, we show **[scene]**, to prove **[angle]**, as a **[format]**.

## A worked example

Say you sell cold-brew coffee sachets, INR 349 for 10. That is about INR 35 a cup. You plan three concepts.

| Concept | Who | Scene | Angle | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 pm slump | Office workers | A yawn at a desk, then a cold coffee | Convenience | UGC video |
| Café vs ours | Students | A INR 180 café bill next to INR 35 | Price | Static |
| Twenty seconds | Busy parents | Tear, pour, stir, done | Speed | Demo video |

Each concept reaches a different person for a different reason. Now you make 3 variants of each, with new hooks. That is 9 ads from 3 ideas, and you can see which idea carries them.

## How to find concepts

1. Read your reviews. Customers say why they bought, in their own words.
2. Read competitor ads. See which angles they repeat. Use the [ad hook examples](/templates/ad-hook-examples) for opening lines.
3. Read comments under your ads, including complaints.
4. Ask sales or support which reason closes the most orders.

Write the opening with care. See [how to write ad hooks](/guides/how-to-write-ad-hooks). Then put each concept through a fair test. See [creative testing](/glossary/creative-testing).

Spread your concepts over at least three or four angles. That is the heart of [creative diversity](/glossary/creative-diversity). Pair it with a clear [ad angle](/glossary/ad-angle) for every idea.

To spot untried concepts, Marxx draws a grid of the angle and format combinations you have never tested. It also turns a competitor's long-running ad into a Hook, Problem, Solution, Proof, CTA brief. We make Marxx. See [competitor tracking](/features/competitor-tracking).

## FAQ

### What is the difference between an ad concept and an angle?

An angle is the reason to care. A concept is a full idea built on an angle, with a scene and a format.

### How many concepts should I test at once?

Three to five. More than that spreads your budget too thin to learn from any of them.

### Can one concept have many ads?

Yes. Those ads are variants. They share an idea and differ in small details.
