Ad fatigue, also called creative fatigue, is when your audience has seen an ad so often that they stop reacting to it. Clicks fall, costs rise and the same budget buys fewer sales.

## The signs

Look for these together over 7 to 14 days, at a steady budget:

- [Frequency](/glossary/frequency) keeps climbing
- CTR keeps falling
- Cost per purchase or cost per lead keeps rising
- Comments shift to "I keep seeing this"

One bad day is noise. A trend across a week is fatigue.

Meta also flags it. For ad sets with one creative, the Delivery column can read "Creative limited" or "Creative fatigue" (checked 2026-10-20). Meta looks at recent repeat views of the ad and at cost per result. "Creative fatigue" appears when cost per result is at least double that of your past ads.

## A worked example

Say a skincare ad has run for five weeks at INR 5,000 a day.

| Week | Frequency | Link CTR | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.4 | 1.6% | INR 420 |
| 3 | 2.6 | 1.1% | INR 560 |
| 5 | 3.9 | 0.7% | INR 840 |

The offer and budget did not change. The ad doubled its cost per purchase because the same people saw it again and again.

## How to fix it

1. **Add new creative, not small edits.** Meta advises a creative that is materially different from the original. Change the hook, the face, the format or the angle.
2. **Rotate.** Keep a few ads live, so no single one carries the campaign.
3. **Widen the audience** if it is small.
4. **Retire the ad** once new ads carry the spend and its cost per result stays above target for a week. Meta says keeping the original live may maximise results.

## Catch it early

Fatigue can show up in creative metrics before it shows up in cost. A falling [hook rate](/glossary/hook-rate) on a video ad can be an early sign.

Marxx splits ads into ones already fatiguing and ones likely to fatigue within seven days, so the next brief starts before the cost moves.

## FAQ

### How long does an ad last before fatigue?

It depends on audience size, budget and how many ads share the spend. A big budget on a small audience tires an ad faster.

### Is ad fatigue the same as creative fatigue?

Yes. Both names describe the same problem.
