An ad naming convention is a rule for naming your campaigns, ad sets and ads, with the same facts in the same order every time. It lets you filter by angle, format or creator in seconds instead of opening each ad.

## A simple pattern

For ads, put the facts you want to compare first:

`ANGLE_FORMAT_HOOK_CREATOR_VERSION`

Example: `PRICE_UGC_QUESTION_PRIYA_V2`

That name says: price angle, UGC video, opens with a question, filmed by Priya, second version. For the full copyable version, see the [ad naming convention template](/templates/ad-naming-convention-template).

## Rules that keep it working

1. **Same order every time.** One field in the wrong place breaks your filters.
2. **Capitals and underscores only.** No spaces, no emojis.
3. **Keep a key.** One shared sheet lists every code.
4. **Name before you launch.** Meta lets you rename an ad later, but it does not mark which results came before the rename.

## A worked example

Say you have 40 ads named this way. You filter ad names containing `PRICE_UGC`.

| Filter | Ads | Spend | Purchases | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `PRICE_UGC` | 9 | INR 1,80,000 | 360 | INR 500 |
| `HEALTH_STATIC` | 7 | INR 70,000 | 70 | INR 1,000 |

Price-led UGC buys at INR 500. Health-led static buys at INR 1,000. You found that in two filters, without a spreadsheet of tags.

## Why it pays off

- Your [weekly ad report](/templates/weekly-ad-report-template) groups itself by angle and format.
- You can see which [ad angle](/glossary/ad-angle) is carrying the account.
- A new team member reads the account on day one.
- Test results stay comparable. See [creative testing](/glossary/creative-testing).

## Common mistakes

- Long names nobody can read on a phone.
- Free-text names like "new ad final 2".
- Changing the pattern halfway through a quarter.
- Putting everything in the name. Keep it to the facts you filter by.

If naming by hand feels like too much, tools can tag ads by what is inside them. Marxx tags ads by hook, angle, format and offer from your connected Meta ad account, so the names matter less.

## FAQ

### What should be in a campaign name versus an ad name?

Put the objective, market and audience stage in the campaign name. Put angle, format, hook and creator in the ad name.

### Can I rename ads after they run?

Yes. Ads Manager lets you rename an ad. Meta says an edit replaces the old version and gives no way to tell results before and after it apart, so name ads right before launch where you can ([Meta Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/2169779963333459), checked 2026-10-20).

### Do I need a naming convention if I run few ads?

Start early anyway. The habit is cheap at 10 ads and painful to add at 200.
