Ad Rank is a set of values Google uses to decide whether your ad is eligible to show and, if it is, where it appears on the page. A higher bid helps, but ad quality, minimum thresholds and the search itself count too (Google Ads Help, checked 2026-10-20).

## The six factors

Google lists these:

1. **Your bid:** the most you are willing to pay for a click.
2. **Ad and landing page quality:** summarised in your Quality Score.
3. **Ad Rank thresholds:** minimum values an ad must reach to show.
4. **Competitiveness of the auction:** how close rival Ad Ranks are.
5. **Context of the search:** the search terms, location, device and time.
6. **Expected impact of ad assets and other formats:** such as sitelinks.

Google lists the factors, not exact weights. It runs the auction every time someone searches.

## A worked example

Here is a simplified teaching version. Real Ad Rank has more parts.

Say two advertisers bid on "wedding photographer Pune". Treat the score as bid times a quality number out of 10.

| | Bid | Quality | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| You | INR 60 | 8 | 480 |
| Rival | INR 80 | 5 | 400 |

You rank above the rival with a lower bid, because your ad and page are better. Google says higher-quality ads can often lead to lower costs per click, and that you often pay less than your maximum bid.

## What to do

- **Match your ads to the search.** Put the keyword in a headline.
- **Make the landing page match the ad.** The same offer, price and wording.
- **Add assets,** such as sitelinks, that make the ad more useful.
- **Raise bids only where the maths works.** Check your [cost per click](/glossary/cpc) and results against what a customer is worth.

A better [click-through rate](/glossary/ctr) usually follows from relevant ads. To see what rivals say in their ads, use the [Google Ads Transparency Center](/guides/how-to-use-google-ads-transparency-center).

## Ad Rank vs Ad Strength

Ad Strength rates how a responsive search ad is built. Google says it is not used to calculate Ad Rank, Quality Score or auction wins.

Google and Meta run different auctions. See [Meta ads vs Google ads](/compare/meta-ads-vs-google-ads).

## FAQ

### Is Ad Rank the same as Quality Score?

No. Quality Score is one input. It summarises your ad and landing page quality.

### Can I win with a lower bid?

Yes. Google says that even if rivals bid more, highly relevant keywords, ads and assets can still win a higher position at a lower price (checked 2026-10-20).

### Where do I see my Ad Rank?

Google works it out fresh in every auction, so it is not one fixed number in your account. Look at your impression share reports to see how often you lost out.
