Ad Strength is a rating Google gives a responsive search ad (RSA) to show how well it is built. The ratings are Incomplete, Poor, Average, Good and Excellent. It does not change your Ad Rank or auction wins ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9921843), checked 2026-10-20).

## What it looks at

Google says Ad Strength mainly checks how well your assets match the keywords you target:

- **Keyword match:** your headlines and descriptions include your key terms.
- **Number of assets:** up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions.
- **Variety:** unique headlines and descriptions, not the same idea repeated.
- **Sitelinks:** at least 6 across the account, campaign or ad group.

## What it does not do

Google says Ad Strength is not used to calculate Ad Rank, Quality Score or auction wins. It is guidance while you build the ad, and it does not directly decide whether your ad can serve.

So a Poor rating does not block your ad, and an Excellent rating does not buy you a better position. Judge the ad by its results.

## A worked example

Say your RSA for "wedding photographer in Pune" has 4 headlines and 2 descriptions. All of them repeat "Best wedding photographer Pune". Google rates it Poor.

| | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Headlines | 4, all alike | 12, different |
| Descriptions | 2 | 4 |
| Sitelinks | 0 | 6 |
| Rating | Poor | Good |

You add headlines for price, years of work, packages and locations, plus 6 sitelinks. The rating moves up. The result that matters is next: did your [click-through rate](/glossary/ctr) and enquiries rise?

## How to raise it

1. Put your main keyword whole inside at least one headline.
2. Write headlines that say different things, such as price, proof, offer, place.
3. Fill the description slots.
4. Add sitelinks.

Do not stuff keywords to chase the label. Real variety also gives Google more combinations to test.

## What to watch instead

Look at your [cost per click](/glossary/cpc), click-through rate and cost per enquiry. A "Good" ad with a poor offer still loses. ## FAQ

### Does Ad Strength affect where my ad shows?

No. Google says it is not used to calculate Ad Rank, Quality Score or auction wins.

### Do I need Excellent on every ad?

No. Aim for Good or better as a sign the ad is well built, then judge it on results.

### Why does my ad say Incomplete?

Google shows Incomplete when something basic is missing, such as a final URL, an ad group or keywords in the ad group. Add the missing parts and check again.
