An AI avatar is a digital person, made by AI, who speaks your script on video. You type the words. The tool gives the person a face, a voice and matching mouth movement. You get a presenter video without a camera crew.

## Two kinds

| | Stock avatar | Custom avatar |
|---|---|---|
| Whose face | A made-up or licensed person from the tool | A real person, built from their video |
| Permission | Set by the tool's licence terms | You need that person's written consent |
| Best for | Fast tests and explainers | Your founder or a paid spokesperson |

## A worked example

Say you want to test 5 openings for a INR 799 face serum. Each test needs INR 1,000 of ad spend.

**Cost per test = making cost + ad spend**

- **With a creator:** INR 3,000 + INR 1,000 = INR 4,000 a test. Five tests cost INR 20,000.
- **With an avatar:** INR 300 + INR 1,000 = INR 1,300 a test. Five tests cost INR 6,500.

The numbers are made up. The ad spend does not shrink. Only the making cost does. Test the openings with avatars, then brief a real person for the winner. See [AI UGC](/glossary/ai-ugc) for the full workflow.

## Checks before you publish

1. **Be honest.** Do not let an avatar play a real customer with a real result.
2. **Check the face.** Look for odd teeth, hands and blinking at full size on a phone.
3. **Check the voice.** Read every word aloud for product names and numbers.
4. **Read the rules.** Meta labelling and India's rules for AI content are on the [AI UGC](/glossary/ai-ugc) page.

To make the video less obvious as AI, see [how to avoid AI-looking ads](/guides/how-to-avoid-ai-looking-ads). For tools, see the [best AI avatar tools for ads](/best/best-ai-avatar-tools-for-ads).

Marxx has a production canvas for image, video, voice, dubbing, avatars and UGC that publishes campaigns, ad sets and ads to Meta. See [the production canvas](/features/production-canvas).

## FAQ

### Is an AI avatar the same as AI UGC?

The avatar is the presenter. AI UGC is the ad style built on it, a creator-style video made with an avatar and an AI voice.

### Can I make an avatar of myself?

Many tools offer custom avatars built from a video of you. Use only your own face, or a face you hold written permission to use.

### Does an avatar need lip sync?

Most avatar tools sync the mouth for you. For a real person's video that you dub, see [AI lip sync](/glossary/ai-lip-sync).
