Alert fatigue is when a team gets so many alerts that it stops reading them, so the one alert that matters gets missed. In advertising it usually comes from too many rules, thresholds set too tight, or alerts mixed into busy channels.

Do not confuse it with [ad fatigue](/glossary/ad-fatigue), which is your audience tiring of an ad. Alert fatigue is your team tiring of messages.

## Signs of alert fatigue

- The alerts channel is muted by most of the team.
- People react with an emoji and move on.
- The same alert fires daily for a reason everyone already knows.
- A real problem sat unseen for hours.

## A simple measure

Alert usefulness = alerts acted on / alerts sent

Say an agency sent 40 alerts last week across its clients and someone acted on 6. Usefulness is 6 / 40 = 15%. About 6 in 7 messages trained the team to ignore the channel.

After cutting four rules and adding a minimum spend, the same team gets 12 alerts and acts on 6. Usefulness is 50%. The team acted on the same 6 problems with 28 fewer messages to read.

## How to fix it

1. **Remove alerts nobody acts on.** Move "nice to know" numbers to a weekly report.
2. **Widen tight thresholds.** Base them on 30 days of normal numbers plus a buffer.
3. **Add severity.** High, Medium and Low tell people what to read first.
4. **Separate channels.** Keep alerts apart from leads and digests.
5. **Snooze known issues.** A snooze stops repeat messages while a fix settles.

We make Marxx. Its alerts carry a severity and have Snooze 7 days and Turn off buttons in Slack; see [Meta ads alerts in Slack](/guides/how-to-set-up-meta-ads-alerts-in-slack). For channel layout, see [Slack channel naming for agencies](/templates/slack-channel-naming-conventions-for-agencies).

## FAQ

### Is alert fatigue only a Slack problem?

No. It happens with email and app notifications too. Slack makes it more visible because alerts compete with chat.

### What usefulness rate should I aim for?

There is no standard. If fewer than half your alerts lead to action, start cutting.
