Bid cap is a Meta bid strategy that sets the highest bid you allow in an ad auction. Meta says it is meant for advertisers who understand how their bid usually turns into results ([Meta Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/272503946776144), checked 2026-10-20).

## How it works

In each auction, Meta works out a bid per impression:

**Bid per impression = bid per estimated action x estimated action rate**

A bid cap limits the bid per estimated action, not per impression. Meta may bid lower if bidding at your cap would spend the budget too fast. It gives no guarantee on actual results.

## A worked example

Say a purchase costing more than INR 600 loses you money. You test a bid cap of INR 750 per purchase. Meta guesses how likely each person is to buy.

| Person | Estimated action rate | Bid per impression | Per 1,000 impressions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Likely buyer | 0.04% (0.0004) | INR 750 x 0.0004 = INR 0.30 | INR 300 |
| Less likely buyer | 0.02% (0.0002) | INR 750 x 0.0002 = INR 0.15 | INR 150 |

The numbers are made up. The cap stays at INR 750, but Meta bids twice as much for the person twice as likely to buy. The cap does not set your cost per purchase. It is a ceiling. Watch your real [CPA](/glossary/cpa) for a week or more. Meta's own example does the same: a brand that loses money above $40 tested a $50 cap.

## Bid cap and cost cap

| | Bid cap | Cost cap |
|---|---|---|
| What you set | The most Meta may bid | The cost per result Meta tries to hold |
| Who it suits | People who know their conversion rates | Advertisers who want cost control |

If you want to control costs, Meta says cost per result goal may suit you better, because it manages more of the maths. People often call that [cost cap](/glossary/cost-cap). If your bid cap is too low, Meta says it can limit or prevent delivery, so you may not spend your full budget ([Meta Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/586282251886816), checked 2026-10-20).

## How to set it

With ad set budgets, enter a cost control in the Performance goal section. Meta then picks cost per result goal. To switch to bid cap, choose Show more options. With Advantage+ campaign budget, pick bid cap as the campaign bid strategy at creation. Then set the amount in each ad set ([Meta Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/491846184627504), checked 2026-10-20).

Know your limit first. See [break-even ROAS](/glossary/break-even-roas). Meta lists a low bid or cost control among the causes of a learning limited ad set ([Meta Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/269269737396981), checked 2026-10-20). See the [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase).

## FAQ

### Is bid cap the same as cost cap?

No. Bid cap limits the bid in each auction. Cost cap aims to keep your average cost near a goal.

### Does a bid cap guarantee my cost per purchase?

No. Meta says it gives no guarantee on actual outcomes.
