Cost per qualified lead (CPQL) is what you pay in ads for each lead that passes your sales team's checks. If INR 84,200 of ads brings 64 qualified leads, your cost per qualified lead is INR 1,316.

## The formula

Cost per qualified lead = ad spend / qualified leads

"Qualified" means whatever your team agreed: right budget, right city, real need, ready within your time frame. Write the rule down so the number means the same thing every week.

## A worked example

Say a holiday company spends INR 84,200 in a week on two Meta lead ads. The numbers are made up.

| | Ad A: Goa monsoon offer | Ad B: Kerala family trip | Both |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spend | INR 42,100 | INR 42,100 | INR 84,200 |
| Leads | 130 | 82 | 212 |
| Cost per lead | INR 324 | INR 513 | INR 397 |
| Qualified leads | 26 | 38 | 64 |
| Cost per qualified lead | INR 1,619 | INR 1,108 | INR 1,316 |

Step by step for Ad A: INR 42,100 / 26 = INR 1,619. For Ad B: INR 42,100 / 38 = INR 1,108.

Judged on cost per lead, Ad A looks better. Judged on cost per qualified lead, Ad B is about INR 500 cheaper for each lead worth a sales call. Moving budget towards Ad B is the better bet.

## Why it beats cost per lead

Cost per lead counts every form fill, including wrong numbers, students who tapped by mistake and people outside your city. Meta optimises for whatever you count. If you only feed it form fills, it finds people who fill forms.

Cost per qualified lead sits between cost per lead and cost per sale. It arrives within days, unlike a sale that may take months, and it reflects lead quality.

## How to track it

1. Mark each lead's stage as soon as the first call is done.
2. Group qualified leads by ad, ad set and campaign.
3. Divide each group's spend by its qualified leads every week.
4. Send the Qualified stage to Meta with the [Conversions API](/glossary/conversions-api), so delivery leans towards people like them. The [Conversions API setup guide](/guides/how-to-set-up-meta-conversions-api) covers how.

Leads that sit uncalled can never qualify, so a slow team inflates this number. Pair it with a [speed to lead](/glossary/speed-to-lead) target. We make Marxx, which shows the ad and campaign behind each Meta lead and can send stages back to Meta. See [Marxx leads](/features/leads).

## FAQ

### What is a good cost per qualified lead?

Work backwards from what a sale is worth. If one in five qualified leads buys and a sale earns INR 20,000 in margin, a qualified lead is worth up to INR 4,000 to you.

### How is CPQL different from CPA?

CPA, [cost per acquisition](/glossary/cpa), usually counts a final action such as a purchase. Cost per qualified lead counts an earlier step, which you reach sooner.
