Creative ops, short for creative operations, is the system that moves an ad from idea to live: who briefs it, where references live, how drafts get reviewed, how files are named and when each step is due. Good creative ops means more ads ship on time with fewer "which version is final?" messages.

## What creative ops covers

- **Intake:** where ideas come from, such as competitor ads, trends or results, and who picks which ones to make.
- **Briefs:** one format everyone uses.
- **References:** boards, moodboards and swipe files that the team can find again.
- **Production:** who makes what, by when.
- **Review and approval:** one approver per ad, feedback in one place.
- **Files and names:** a [naming convention](/glossary/ad-naming-convention) so the right file goes live.
- **Handover to launch:** the media buyer gets the ad, its name and its test plan.

## Who does what

| Role | Creative ops job |
|---|---|
| [Creative strategist](/glossary/creative-strategist) | Picks ideas, writes briefs, reads results |
| Designer or video editor | Makes the ad, asks questions early |
| Producer or ops lead | Runs the calendar, chases deadlines, keeps files tidy |
| Media buyer | Launches, says how many ads the budget can test |
| Account lead | Gets client sign-off, keeps the client informed |

In a small team one person wears three of these hats. The jobs still exist, so write down who owns each.

## Worked example

Say a four-person agency team runs ads for a fictional travel client, Northwind Escapes, and wants 8 new ads a month. Without a system, briefs arrive by WhatsApp, files are called "final2", and 5 ads ship. With a simple creative ops setup (one brief format, one approver, one channel for drafts, a weekly review) the same team plans 8 slots on a calendar and can see on day 15 that 2 are behind. The fix is in the process, not more hours.

## Where Slack fits

Slack is where creative ops happens day to day: ideas get posted, drafts get reviewed in threads, approvals get recorded. It works when each client has its own creative channel and feedback stays in threads. It fails when briefs and approvals are buried at reply 30. Keep briefs in a doc and link them. For the agency-wide setup, see [how to set up Slack for an ad agency](/guides/how-to-set-up-slack-for-an-ad-agency).

Marxx can post competitor digests and weekly sector trends into a client's channel, which feeds the intake step. We make Marxx.

## FAQ

### Is creative ops the same as project management?

It is project management for creative work, plus the parts specific to ads: references, briefs, reviews and handover to the media buyer.

### Does a small team need creative ops?

Yes, in a light form. One brief format, one approver and one channel per client already count.
