Creative testing means running different ads side by side with the same budget and audience, to learn which idea gets more people to act. Change one thing at a time, so you know what caused the gap.

## What to test, in order

| Test first | Then | Last |
|---|---|---|
| Angle: the reason to buy | Hook: the first 3 seconds | Colours, fonts, small edits |
| Format: UGC, static, demo | Offer: price, bundle, free shipping | Button text |

Big differences produce clear answers. A new font rarely does.

## How to set up a test

1. Pick one thing to change, such as the hook.
2. Make 3 to 5 versions. Keep everything else the same.
3. Give each version the same daily budget, for example one ad set each.
4. Decide before you start: how many days, how much spend, and which number picks the winner, such as cost per purchase or [hook rate](/glossary/hook-rate).
5. Do not edit anything while it runs.

## A worked example

Say you test 4 hooks on one offer. Each gets INR 1,500 a day for 5 days, so INR 7,500 each.

| Hook | Purchases | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|
| A | 19 | INR 395 |
| B | 12 | INR 625 |
| C | 24 | INR 313 |
| D | 9 | INR 833 |

C and A beat B and D by a wide margin. C against A is too close to call, because 24 against 19 is a small gap. Keep both, and test the next idea against them.

## Common mistakes

- Judging after one day. Costs swing daily.
- Changing hook, offer and format in one version.
- Testing tiny edits, then learning nothing.
- Leaving losers on. See [when to turn off an ad](/guides/how-to-know-when-to-kill-an-ad).

Meta also says dynamic creative, which mixes your assets into many combinations, should not replace split testing, because results show as one combined number (Meta Help Centre, checked 2026-10-20).

Meta's [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase) needs enough results per ad set, so a test with too many versions can starve each one. Name each version clearly with an [ad naming convention](/templates/ad-naming-convention-template).

Marxx tags your past ads by hook, angle, format and offer, so you can see which ideas you have not tested yet.

## FAQ

### How long should a creative test run?

Run it for several days, and let each version spend at least two to three times your target cost per purchase before you judge it. Judge by your own cost per result, not by a fixed number of days.

### How many ads should I test at once?

Three to five per test. More versions spread budget so thin that none finishes learning.

### Is dynamic creative a creative test?

Not a clean one. It helps you explore, but you only see combined results. Use split tests for answers you will act on.
