Frame rate is how many still pictures (frames) play each second, written as fps. Export at the rate you filmed at, such as 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps.

## The formula

Frames = fps x seconds

## A worked example

Say your ad runs 30 seconds.

| Frame rate | Frames in 30 seconds |
|---|---|
| 24 fps | 24 x 30 = 720 |
| 30 fps | 30 x 30 = 900 |
| 60 fps | 60 x 30 = 1,800 |

Double the fps and you double the frames. More frames look smoother on fast motion and make a bigger file.

## What platforms say

- **Meta:** asks for a fixed frame rate and gives no number on its ad spec pages.
- **YouTube:** upload at the frame rate you recorded. Common rates are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60. Deinterlace first.
- **LinkedIn:** its two pages disagree. The business spec page recommends 30 fps. The help page says "Less than 30 FPS". Check the live page.
- **Apple:** 60 fps or lower at 1080p or lower is more broadly compatible with older devices.

## Do not change the rate

Apple's Compressor guide says changing the frame rate may add visible artifacts, such as stuttering or repeated frames. Fast motion shows it most. Keep your export rate the same as your footage. For file size, see [video bitrate](/glossary/video-bitrate).

Tool limits differ. DaVinci Resolve's free edition works with 8-bit video up to 60 fps. VN exports at 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60 fps.

Marxx's [AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) exports up to 30 frames per second. If you filmed at 60 fps, check that 30 fps suits the ad. We make Marxx.

Slow motion is the one case where a high rate helps. See [speed ramp](/glossary/speed-ramp).

## FAQ

### What frame rate for Instagram Reels?

Meta's ad pages give no number. Keep the rate you filmed at, and keep it fixed.

### Is 60 fps better than 30 fps?

It looks smoother on fast motion and makes a bigger file. A talking-head ad rarely needs it.

### What is a fixed frame rate?

The same fps from start to end, not a rate that changes. Meta asks for it.
