A J-cut is an edit where the sound of the next shot starts before its picture appears. The viewer hears the next line, then sees who says it.

## The J in J-cut

On the timeline, the next clip's audio starts earlier than its picture. The shapes of the clips look like the letter J. The opposite edit is the [L-cut](/glossary/l-cut). A [jump cut](/glossary/jump-cut) is different: it skips time inside one shot.

## A worked example

Say shot A ends and shot B appears at 12.0 seconds. The voice in shot B starts at 11.5 seconds.

| Track | What plays |
|---|---|
| Picture | Shot A until 12.0 s, then shot B |
| Sound | Shot A's sound, then shot B's voice from 11.5 s |

The sound leads by 0.5 seconds. At 30 frames per second, that is 0.5 x 30 = **15 frames**.

## How to make one

1. Cut the picture and the sound at the same point.
2. Detach or unlink the audio so it moves alone. The command name differs by editor.
3. Drag the start of shot B's audio earlier, under the end of shot A.
4. Fade shot A's sound if two voices clash.
5. Play it back and trim until it feels smooth.

## When ads use it

- A voice begins the offer while the face is still on screen, then the product appears.
- Street or kitchen noise starts before the shot that shows it.
- You want to hide a cut and pull the viewer forward.
- The main footage is the [A-roll](/glossary/a-roll), and the next shot is a cutaway.

Test it on your own ad and watch [hold rate](/glossary/hold-rate). A cut that feels smooth does not prove a longer watch time.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between a J-cut and an L-cut?

In a J-cut the next sound comes early. In an L-cut the last sound stays late, over the next picture.

### How long should the lead be?

Keep it short, from a few frames to about a second. Trim until it feels smooth.

### Does it only work for speech?

No. Music or a sound effect can lead the picture too.
