# What is a jump cut?

A jump cut removes a slice of time from one continuous shot, so the picture seems to jump forward. Ads use it to cut pauses and keep a talking shot moving.

## Where ads use it

- Talking-to-camera and UGC clips, where each pause costs attention.
- Cutting a stumble or filler word ("um", "uh") out of a good take.
- Keeping a long demo short.

## A worked example

Say a take runs 20 seconds and has five pauses of 0.8 seconds each.

5 x 0.8 = **4 seconds** of pauses.

20 − 4 = **16 seconds** after the cuts. The clip is 20% shorter (4 / 20).

## Hiding the jump

A jump cut can feel abrupt. Cover it with cutaway footage or a small zoom. An [L-cut](/glossary/l-cut) also helps, because the voice stays smooth under the new picture.

### Is a jump cut a mistake?

Not on social video, where fast pace is common. In classic film editing a jump cut can read as an error, so use it on purpose.

### How do I remove filler words?
