A Slack thread is a chain of replies under one message. The replies sit under that message instead of in the main channel, so one conversation stays together and the channel stays readable.

## How a thread works

1. Someone posts a message in a channel.
2. You hover over it and choose to reply in a thread.
3. Your reply appears under that message. The channel shows a small count of replies.
4. Everyone who replied gets notified of new replies in that thread.

## Why bots answer in threads

Many ad tool bots answer in threads. Three reasons:

- **The question and answer stay together.** Ten people can ask ten questions in one channel without the answers mixing.
- **The bot can follow up.** When you reply in the same thread, the bot knows which question you mean.
- **The channel stays clean.** Leads and alerts stay visible at the top level, and the talk about each one sits under it.

For example, Runneth replies in thread when you tag @Runneth, per Motion's help. Marxx answers @Marxx questions in the thread, and you reply in the same thread to keep going. We make Marxx. See [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack) and [how to ask AI about your ad account in Slack](/guides/how-to-ask-ai-about-your-ad-account-in-slack).

## Worked example

Say a lead alert lands in #client-northwind-leads at 11:02. Priya Shah calls the lead and replies in the thread: "Called, wants a Goa package for 4 in December." Karan Mehta adds in the thread at 11:20: "Sent the quote, INR 96,000 for 4." The channel still shows one message, the lead, with 2 replies under it. The next lead at 11:05 stays easy to spot.

| Without threads | With threads |
|---|---|
| Lead, 2 replies, next lead, all in one line | Each lead with its replies under it |
| Easy to miss the 11:05 lead | Every lead visible at a glance |

## Good thread habits

- Reply in the thread, not the channel, when you answer a bot or a lead.
- Keep one topic per thread. Start a new message for a new topic.
- Use threads in shared client channels, so each week's update keeps its own questions. See [how to set up Slack for an ad agency](/guides/how-to-set-up-slack-for-an-ad-agency) and the Slack channel glossary entry.

## FAQ

### Why did the bot not see my reply?

Some bots follow only threads they started, or need a fresh mention. Mention the bot again in the thread, and check the tool's Slack settings for a reconnect step.

### Can a client see thread replies in a shared channel?

Yes. Everyone in the channel can open the thread.
