Speed to lead is the time between a person submitting your lead form and your team first contacting them. A lead who fills your form at 14:11 and gets a call at 14:20 had a speed to lead of 9 minutes.

## The formula

Speed to lead = time of first contact − time the form was submitted

First contact means a real attempt to reach the person: a call, or a message they can read. An automatic "thanks for your interest" email does not count.

## Why it matters for ad spend

You pay Meta or Google the moment the form is submitted. The lead is at its warmest then, and may have tapped a rival's ad too. Every hour you wait, the same rupees buy you a colder conversation.

It is also the part of lead cost you fully control. You cannot set Meta's auction price, but you can pick up the phone within 10 minutes.

## Worked example in rupees

Say Northwind Escapes, a fictional travel agency, spends INR 84,200 in a week and gets 212 leads. That is INR 397 a lead.

| Week | Typical wait before first call | Leads that had already booked elsewhere or stopped answering | Spend on those leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow week | 5 hours | 46 | 46 x INR 397 = INR 18,262 |
| Fast week | 8 minutes | 12 | 12 x INR 397 = INR 4,764 |

The numbers are made up. Count the leads you could not really talk to, multiply by cost per lead, and you see what slow follow-up costs. Here the slow week lost INR 13,498 more than the fast one, on the same ads.

## How to cut it

1. **Get every lead to a person within moments.** Send it to the screen your team already watches. Our [guide to Facebook lead notifications in Slack](/guides/how-to-get-facebook-lead-notifications-in-slack) shows the options.
2. **Give every lead an owner,** or everyone assumes someone else called.
3. **Set a target,** such as 10 minutes in office hours, and check it weekly.
4. **Cover nights and weekends,** or say on the form when you will call.

Tools that post leads to a chat app are compared in [best tools to send Facebook leads to Slack](/best/best-tools-to-send-facebook-leads-to-slack). We make Marxx. It posts each new Meta lead in the client's Slack channel within moments, with a Mark contacted button. See [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack).

## FAQ

### What is a good speed to lead?

There is no single right number. Set a target your team can keep in office hours, often minutes rather than hours, and measure against it each week.

### Is speed to lead the same as lead response time?

They are close. Speed to lead is the habit and the goal. Lead response time is the measured number for each lead, which you average or track over a week.
