A VTT file (WebVTT, short for Web Video Text Tracks) is a plain text caption file built for web video players. It looks like an [SRT file](/glossary/srt-file) with a few changes.

## What is inside

```
WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.800
Tired of dull skin?
00:00:01.800 --> 00:00:03.500
Try this for seven days.
```

## SRT or VTT

| | SRT | VTT |
|---|---|---|
| First line | None | WEBVTT |
| Times | Comma before milliseconds | Dot before milliseconds |
| Caption numbers | Used | Optional |
| Extra settings such as position | No | Yes |

## A worked example

Say you have an SRT caption timed 00:00:03,500. To turn it into VTT:

1. Add the line WEBVTT at the top of the file.
2. Change each comma in the times to a dot, so 00:00:03,500 becomes **00:00:03.500**.
3. Delete the caption numbers, or leave them.
4. Save the file with the .vtt ending.

## Which tools export it

- **Descript:** the subtitle export offers .srt or .vtt, plus "Show speakers", "Max characters per line" and "Max lines per card".
- **DaVinci Resolve:** its Edit page says subtitles export as TTML, SRT or VTT files.
- **Marxx:** Marxx's [AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) imports SRT, VTT and ASS and exports captions as SRT or VTT. We make Marxx.

Check which file your platform wants first. LinkedIn's help page asks for an SRT for video ads (checked 3 Nov 2026). See [closed captions](/glossary/closed-captions) for how these files are used.
