To add a payment method to Meta ads in India, open Billing and payments, click Add payment method and follow the prompts. You must be an admin, and UPI or NetBanking only work if you chose them when you first set up the account.

## What India accepts

Meta's India page lists these methods (checked 2026-10-20, [source](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1410784518969094)).

| Method | How you pay |
|---|---|
| Visa and Mastercard credit cards, and co-branded debit cards | Automatic payments, if your bank supports recurring card payments. Meta charges the card when your spend reaches a payment threshold, and on your monthly bill date for what is left. |
| NetBanking and UPI | Available funds. You add money first, and Meta deducts it as your ads run. |

Meta's India page also lists American Express, but another Meta page says Amex is not supported in India, so check before you rely on it.

Meta states the catch plainly. The manual methods only exist if your ad account country is India and the currency is rupees (INR). You can only add one if you chose it when you first set up the account.

## Steps

1. Go to **Billing and payments** in Ads Manager.
2. With one ad account, click **Payment settings** in the left menu. With several, pick the account under **Accounts**, then click **Payment methods**.
3. Click **Add payment method**.
4. Select the method and click **Next**.
5. Follow the on-screen steps for that method.

If your ad account sits inside a business portfolio, you need full control of it. If permissions are managed in Ads Manager, you need admin permission ([Meta's steps](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/132073386867900), checked 2026-10-20).

If your account runs on available funds, these steps do not apply. You add money with your manual method instead. If you save more than one method, set a default. Meta uses your available funds first, then the default.

## A worked example

Say you plan to spend INR 2,000 a day.

- **Card:** Meta charges the card when your spend reaches a payment threshold, and on your bill date for the rest. If your bank declines a payment, delivery can stop, and a failed payment can disable the ad account.
- **UPI:** On Monday you add INR 14,000, enough for a week. Meta deducts from it about once a day. By Sunday the balance is near zero, so top up before then or turn on auto reload, which adds money when the balance falls below a level you set.

## Common mistakes

- **Not being an admin.** Without admin rights you cannot add or edit a method. Ask an admin.
- **Expecting to add UPI later.** On an account set up with a card, you cannot add a manual method afterwards.
- **Letting prepaid money run out.** Ads stop when the balance hits zero.
- **Adding funds in the Instagram iOS app.** Meta says an Apple service fee of 30% may apply in most regions. Use instagram.com instead ([source](https://help.instagram.com/559808137514535)).
- **Not having the OTP phone to hand.** Meta says to link your card to a phone number you can reach, because your bank may send a one-time password ([source](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/268196136699959)).

Once your payment is set, add your GST number so you can claim credit later. See [how to claim GST input credit on Meta ads](/guides/how-to-claim-gst-input-credit-on-meta-ads). Then run through the [Meta ads launch checklist](/templates/launch-checklist-for-meta-ads) before you publish. New to boosting from the app? ## FAQ

### Can I pay for Meta ads with UPI?

Yes, if your ad account country is India, your currency is INR and you chose UPI when you first set up the account. It runs as prepaid available funds.

### Do I need a GST number to add a payment method?

No. Meta says entering a GSTIN is not mandatory. Add it if you are registered for GST and want to claim input tax credit.

### Why can I not add a payment method?

Usually it is permissions, since only admins or people with full control can add one. The other cause is an account set up for available funds, where you add money instead.
