In Premiere Pro (now called Adobe Premiere), open Window > Text and transcribe your audio. Then choose Captions > Create captions from transcript and select Create captions, once your edit is final (checked 3 Nov 2026).

## Step A: make the transcript

1. Choose Window > Text.
2. In the Transcript tab, select the icon that opens "Generate static transcript".
3. Set the language. Download the language pack if Premiere asks. Set speaker labeling and the audio to analyse.
4. Tick "Transcribe In point to Out point only" if you want just part of the sequence.
5. Select **Transcribe**.

To transcribe a whole sequence, select "Transcribe sequence" in the Text panel. Adobe publishes a list of Speech to Text languages, so check that yours is on it before you start.

## Step B: make the captions

1. Choose Window > Workspaces > Captions and Graphics.
2. In the Text panel's Captions tab, choose **Create captions from transcript**.
3. In the dialog, pick a caption preset. "Subtitle default" suits most uses. Set the format, stream, style, caption length and lines.
4. Select **Create captions**. The captions land on a new caption track.

Adobe says Text-Based Editing does not support the captions workflow. Generate captions from your final edited sequence.

## One word at a time

In the Create Captions dialog, expand Captioning Preferences. Under Layout, choose **Single Word**. This gives the social-video look. See [Hormozi-style captions](/guides/how-to-make-hormozi-style-captions).

## Style the captions

1. Select the caption text in the Timeline panel.
2. In the Properties panel, set the look: text, fill, stroke, shadow, alignment and position.
3. Select the plus icon on the Track style menu, then **Create style**.
4. Name it and choose "Save to Project" or "Save to Local styles".

To reuse it on another track, select the caption, open the Properties panel, and pick the style under Linked style.

## Import or export SRT

- **Import:** import the .srt into the project, then drag it onto the sequence. Premiere makes a caption track.
- **Export:** open the Export screen. In the Captions section, set Export Options to "Create Sidecar File". Choose "SubRip Subtitle Format (.srt)".
- **Burn in:** set Export Options to "Burn Captions Into Video". The text cannot be switched off on playback.

An .srt file holds one stream. If the Captions section is greyed out, the sequence has no caption track. Which route suits an ad? Read [open vs closed captions](/compare/open-captions-vs-closed-captions) and [how to add captions to video ads](/guides/how-to-add-captions-to-video-ads).

## Cost, and a browser option

Premiere is a subscription app, with a 7-day free trial on the single-app plan (checked 3 Nov 2026). Text-Based Editing is included with it. See [Premiere Pro pricing](/prices/premiere-pro-pricing).

[Marxx's AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) adds auto-captions at word, phrase or sentence level in the browser. It imports SRT, VTT or ASS and exports SRT or VTT. We make Marxx.
