Open your project in Edits, tap **Captions** in the bottom tools row, set the spoken language and a style, then tap **Generate captions**. Edits is free to download, and Instagram says exports have no added watermark (checked 3 Nov 2026).

## Steps in the app

1. Tap the Projects icon at the bottom, then tap your project to open the editing view.
2. Tap **Captions** in the bottom tools row.
3. Set the language spoken in the video.
4. Pick a caption style.
5. Set the transcription controls: punctuation, title case, and whether to show curse words.
6. Tap **Generate captions**.

These steps are for the phone app. Edits runs on iPhone (iOS 16.3 or later) and Android, and Instagram's help pages cover the phone app only.

## Fix the captions

Read every line before you export. Check brand names, prices and INR amounts. Then select the captions layer and tap one of these:

- **Style** changes the look.
- **Edit** corrects the words.
- **Opacity** changes how solid the text is.
- **Bilingual**, which the help page describes as changing the caption language.
- **Move** places the text on the screen.

Drag the ends of a caption clip to change how long it shows. Instagram says the Text tool has hundreds of fonts for text and captions. On 28 Nov 2025 Edits added Devanagari and Bengali-Assamese fonts, which cover Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Assamese. They reached Android first (Meta newsroom).

## Export with captions

1. In your project, tap the resolution label at the top right. Choose the resolution, frame rate and colour.
2. Tap **Next** at the top right.
3. Tap **Download** to save the video to your camera roll.
4. To post, tap **Share to Instagram**. Or tap Next, then Instagram, then Save draft.

If you edit after exporting, the exported file does not change. Export again.

## What Instagram does not say

- The Edits help pages do not list which languages auto captions understand. Test a short Hindi clip before you caption a full ad.
- They do not mention importing or exporting an SRT file.
- Instagram's separate auto captions setting for Reels is a different feature.

If you need a desktop timeline, [Marxx's AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) adds auto-captions at word, phrase or sentence level in your browser. On a phone it opens a player, not the editor. We make Marxx.

For a Meta ad you can also upload an .srt file in Ads Manager. The steps are in [how to add captions to video ads](/guides/how-to-add-captions-to-video-ads). To compare other apps, see [best caption apps for Reels](/best/best-caption-apps-for-reels) and [Edits alternatives](/alternatives/instagram-edits-alternatives). For cost, see [Edits pricing](/prices/edits-app-pricing).

## Mistakes to avoid

- Exporting before you read the captions
- Editing the clip after you export, then posting the old file
- Placing captions low, where Instagram's buttons sit
- Trusting Hindi captions without a test

## FAQ

### Is the Edits app free?

Yes. Instagram says Edits is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. The App Store lists in-app purchases but shows no prices, and Instagram's pages name no paid plan (checked 3 Nov 2026).

### Does Edits put a watermark on my video?

Instagram says no. Meta's launch post says exports have no added watermarks (checked 3 Nov 2026).

### Can Edits caption Hindi?

Instagram does not publish a list of caption languages. It added Devanagari fonts on 28 Nov 2025, so Hindi text can be styled. Test the auto captions on a short clip first.
