Press **Add note** on the lead's message in Slack, type the note in the small form that opens, and submit it. Marxx saves the note on the lead in Marxx under your name, and posts a short "Note added by" reply in the message's thread.

## Step by step

1. Find the lead's message in the client's Slack channel.
2. Press **Add note**. The first time you press a Marxx button, you link your Slack account once with **Link your Slack account**, then come back.
3. A small form opens in Slack. Type your note.
4. Submit the form.
5. Marxx saves the note on the lead in Marxx, under your name.
6. A reply appears in the message's thread, such as "Note added by Priya Shah".

## Where the note goes

The note itself stays in Marxx. The Slack thread only shows that a note was added and by whom.

| | In Marxx | In Slack |
|---|---|---|
| The note text | Saved on the lead | Not posted |
| Who wrote it | Your name | "Note added by" your name |
| Who can read it | People who can open that client in Marxx | Everyone in the channel sees that a note exists |

This is on purpose. A call note often holds details like a budget, a phone number or a family situation. Keeping the text in Marxx means a busy channel, or a channel shared with another company, never shows it. The [Leads feature](/features/leads) page covers how leads and notes sit in Marxx.

## What to write in a note

A good note lets the next person pick up the lead without calling you. Keep it to four short lines:

```
Reached: yes, 11:40, call
Wants: Goa, 3 nights, 2 adults, mid-Dec
Budget: about INR 45,000 for the trip
Next: send 2 hotel options on WhatsApp by 4 pm
```

Say Karan picks this lead up the next morning because the first caller is on leave. He reads four lines and knows the trip, the budget and the promise made. Without the note he calls the lead and asks the same questions again.

## Notes and Mark contacted together

Most calls end with both buttons:

1. Press **Mark contacted** so the channel shows "✓ Contacted by" and your name.
2. Press **Add note** to record what happened.

**Mark contacted** works only while the lead is still at its first stage, New. For a second or third follow-up, a note is the way to record progress from Slack. We make Marxx. More on the buttons in [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack), and on why fast first contact matters in [speed to lead](/glossary/speed-to-lead).

## Common mistakes

- **Writing the note as a thread reply.** A plain reply stays in Slack for everyone in the channel, and never reaches the lead in Marxx.
- **Notes like "called".** Write the outcome and the next step, not just the action.
- **Pasting phone numbers into the note's thread.** Keep them on the lead in Marxx.

## FAQ

### Can other people in the channel read my note?

They see "Note added by" and your name in the thread. The note itself is in Marxx, where people who can open that client can read it.

### Do I need to link my Slack account to add notes?

Yes, once. The first Marxx button you press asks you to link, and after that buttons act as you.

### Can people from the client's company add notes from a shared channel?

No. People from other companies in a shared Slack channel cannot use Marxx buttons.
