In DaVinci Resolve, you can add subtitles by hand on a subtitle track in the free edition, and Studio can generate them from the audio (checked 3 Nov 2026). Resolve also imports SRT files and exports SRT, TTML or VTT.

## Free or Studio

| Feature | Edition |
|---|---|
| Subtitles track, typed by hand | Free |
| Subtitles and transcriptions from audio | Studio |
| Subtitle animation | Studio |

Source: Blackmagic's Resolve 21.1 feature table. DaVinci Resolve is free. Studio has a list price of US$295, on sale for US$236 until 20 Nov 2026. In India it is Rs 25,980 on sale (list Rs 31,980), excluding GST (checked 3 Nov 2026). See [DaVinci Resolve pricing](/prices/davinci-resolve-pricing).

## Add a subtitle track

- **Cut page:** click the Timeline Actions icon, then **Add Subtitle Track**.
- **Edit page:** the Edit page has the same subtitle support. Blackmagic's feature guides do not print the menu path, so look in the Timeline menu.

You can import timed text files (TTML, SRT, XML), relink them or create subtitles from scratch.

## Auto subtitles in Studio

Blackmagic's Resolve 18.5 guide gives these steps.

1. On the Edit page, open the timeline. Set an In and Out range if you want part of it.
2. Choose Timeline > Auto Caption.
3. In the dialog, set the Language, Caption Preset and Max Characters per Line.
4. Click **Start**. Resolve makes a subtitle track if none exists.

On the Cut page, use the Timeline Actions icon, then "Create Subtitles from Audio". No guide confirms the current menu label in version 21, so check the Timeline menu for subtitles from audio.

For more languages in Studio, Resolve 20's guide gives these steps.

1. Open DaVinci Resolve > Extras Download Manager.
2. Download "Extended Transcription Language Support".
3. In Project Settings > Subtitles and Transcription, tick "Enable Extended Language Support".

Blackmagic's pages do not list Hindi.

## Polish in Resolve 21

- Search, Replace and Replace All sit behind the search icon in the Subtitle Inspector.
- Drag the fade handles on a subtitle clip for a fade in or out.
- Select a subtitle clip, open the Video Inspector's Caption tab and choose **Update Word Timings**. Or right-click the subtitle track header and choose "Synchronize Word Timings".

## Export or burn in

- **SRT from a transcript:** in the Transcription window's Option menu, choose Export Subtitles. Set the file name, Caption Preset, Maximum Characters per Line, Number of Lines and Gap Between Subtitles. Click Create.
- **SRT, TTML or VTT from a track:** the Edit page says subtitles can be exported as separate files. The exact menu path is not in the guides.
- **Burn in:** Blackmagic says subtitles can be rendered into the final video. An older guide puts the options under the Deliver page's video render settings, so check the label in your version.

Do not mix this up with Workspace > Data Burn-In, which overlays metadata such as timecode.

## A browser option

[Marxx's AI video editor](/features/ai-video-editor) adds auto-captions at word, phrase or sentence level in the browser, with no install. We make Marxx.
