Start on Meta with one hero product and one offer, and work out your break-even ROAS before you spend. Run one simple sales campaign, test new creative every week, and add WhatsApp and Google once Meta gives you a steady cost per sale.

## Step 1: set up the basics

- Add a payment method and your GST number. See [how to add a payment method to Meta ads in India](/guides/how-to-add-a-payment-method-to-meta-ads-in-india).
- Install tracking so Meta sees real purchases. Use the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API together.
- Open your product page on a phone and check that it loads fast.

## Step 2: know your break-even

[Break-even ROAS](/glossary/break-even-roas) is 1 divided by your gross margin. It tells you the lowest return your ads can earn without losing money.

## Step 3: launch one simple campaign

Run one sales campaign, such as an [Advantage+ sales campaign](/glossary/advantage-plus-shopping-campaigns), with broad targeting and three to five different ads. Meta says an ad set usually needs about 50 results in a week to exit the learning phase (checked 2026-10-20, [source](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/112167992830700)). Set your budget so you can reach that.

## Step 4: test creative, not tweaks

Change the angle, the person or the first three seconds. A new button colour is not a test. See [how to build a creative testing budget](/guides/how-to-build-a-creative-testing-budget).

## Step 5: add channels in order

1. **Meta first.** It finds buyers who were not searching.
2. **WhatsApp next,** if buyers ask questions before they pay. See [how to advertise on WhatsApp in India](/guides/how-to-advertise-on-whatsapp-in-india).
3. **Google search last,** to catch people already looking for your product type.

## Step 6: plan the festival calendar

Festival dates change every year, so brief creative weeks ahead. In 2026, Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November (checked 2026-10-20), so start with [Dhanteras](/campaigns/dhanteras-ad-ideas). Bhai Dooj follows a few days after Diwali, and its date can differ by a day by region.

## A worked example

Say you sell a INR 999 hair oil. Product cost is INR 250, packing and shipping INR 90, and gateway fees plus a returns allowance INR 60. Total cost is INR 400, so each sale leaves INR 599.

- Gross margin: 599 / 999 = 0.60
- Break-even ROAS: 1 / 0.60 = **1.67**
- Highest cost per sale you can afford: INR 599

You aim for INR 500 per sale to keep a margin. To get 50 sales a week you need INR 25,000 a week, about INR 3,570 a day. If that is too much, optimise for add to cart first, as Meta suggests for rare events, and move to purchases as volume grows.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Judging ads after one day
- Running ten products at once on a small budget
- Changing budgets and audiences every day, which keeps ad sets learning
- Watching only platform ROAS. Check MER too, which divides total store revenue by total ad spend.

We make Marxx. It reads your Meta ad account, tags each creative by hook, angle, format and offer, and shows which angles you have not tested yet.

## FAQ

### How much should a new D2C brand spend on ads?

Enough to reach about 50 results a week in one ad set. Multiply your target cost per sale by 50 to find the weekly number.

### Should I start with Meta or Google?

Start with Meta, because it finds people who were not searching. Add Google search when you have a product people already look for.

### How long before ads work?

Give each new ad set at least a week before you judge it. Big edits restart learning.
