The Facebook Ad Library has no button to download an ad's video, because each ad card's three-dot menu offers only Report ad and Copy Ad Link (checked 2026-10-20). For research, save the link, record your screen for private study, or use a tool that saves ads.

Do not republish the video. For the wider picture, including images, see [how to download ads from the Meta Ad Library](/guides/how-to-download-ads-from-meta-ad-library).

## Your options

| Option | What you keep | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Copy Ad Link | A link to the ad | Quick bookmarks |
| Your device's built-in screen recorder | A video file | A few ads you want to study closely |
| A browser extension that saves ads | The ad and its details | Many ads |

For your own videos, use the original file from your editor or your creative folder, not the library.

If you record, close other apps first so notifications stay out of the frame. Play the ad all the way through. Add the Library ID and start date to the file name.

## Study the video

Saving a video is only useful if you learn from it. Use this sheet for each one.

1. **Watch twice.** Once with sound, once muted, to see what the on-screen text carries.
2. **Log the hook.** Write what you see, hear and read in the first three seconds. See [what a hook is](/glossary/ad-hook).
3. **Count the cuts** and the total length.
4. **Mark the jobs.** Hook, problem, proof, offer, call to action.
5. **Note who appears** and where.
6. **Check the start date.** A video that has run for months matters more. See [how to find out how long an ad has been running](/guides/how-to-find-out-how-long-an-ad-has-been-running).

## A worked example

Say you study a rival's 24-second Reel ad for a hand cream. You log it like this.

| Time | What we see | What we hear | On-screen text | Job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 3 s | Cracked hands under hot water | "My hands in winter." | "Dry hands? Watch this" | Hook |
| 3 to 9 s | A creator applies the cream | "I switched last month." | None | Problem |
| 9 to 18 s | A towel test on camera | "Soaks in, no sticky." | "No sticky feel" | Proof |
| 18 to 24 s | The jar on a shelf | "Use code WINTER for INR 100 off." | "INR 100 off" | Offer and call to action |

It has 9 cuts in 24 seconds, one about every 2.7 seconds. It opens on the problem, not on a logo.

Your next step is to write your own version with a different person, setting and offer. You can check your own hook with [hook rate](/glossary/hook-rate) once it runs.

## Use what you save with care

The videos belong to the brands. Keep your copies for private research. Do not reuse their footage, music or voice in your own ads. File what you learn in a [swipe file](/guides/how-to-build-a-swipe-file).

## Mistakes to avoid

- **Re-uploading someone's video.**
- **Judging by looks alone.** Check how long the ad has run.
- **Not logging the Library ID.** You cannot find the ad again.
- **Copying the whole ad.** Copy the structure, not the footage.

We make Marxx. Its browser extension adds a Save button to the Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn ad libraries, Pinterest and Google Images.

## FAQ

### Does Meta let you download Ad Library videos?

Not that we found. The card menu has Report ad and Copy Ad Link only.

### Can I screen record an ad for research?

Treat a recording as a private note. The video belongs to the brand, so never repost it or reuse it in your own ads. Meta's terms and local law set the exact limits.

### Where do I keep the videos?

In one folder named by brand, Library ID and start date, with a sheet that logs the hook, offer and length.
