When a Meta ads payment fails, Meta pauses your ads and disables the ad account until you pay the amount due. Go to Billing & payments, pick the ad account, open Payment methods, click Pay now and choose a method that works.

Steps below follow [Meta's failed payment page](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/268196136699959), its [e-mandate page for India](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/3536169639844756) and its page on [paying early](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1814143615511573), checked 2026-10-20.

## Steps

1. **Check the status.** Billing & payments may show that your account is unsettled. You get no new charges until you pay what is due.
2. **Pay the balance.** You must be an admin. Open **Billing & payments**, select the ad account, click **Payment methods**, then **Pay now**. Pick a saved method or add a new one.
3. **If your account runs on prepaid funds** (UPI, for example), click **Add funds** instead. It may take a little while for the account to return to good standing.
4. **If the payment fails again,** try a different card, or add a new payment method.
5. **Wait for ads to resume.** Meta says it restarts active or scheduled ads once you pay, and tries to make up lost time to meet your original dates and budgets. If ads stay paused, you may have reached the daily spending limit Meta set.

In India, Meta's pages disagree. The failed payment page says advertisers in India may not be able to use Pay now or Add funds on a disabled account. The e-mandate page says Pay now works. Try it. If it fails, add a card that supports recurring payments.

## Common reasons and fixes

| Reason Meta lists | What to do |
|---|---|
| Method not supported | Check the method is available in your country. One method can sit on up to 10 ad accounts |
| Card or recurring payment inactive | Update details or add a new method |
| Invalid expiry date | Fix the date or add a new card |
| Card could not be verified (3DS or OTP) | Check the CVV and OTP phone, or add another card |
| Declined by your bank | Check the details, then ask your bank or add another method |
| Connection error | Try later or use another method |
| Insufficient funds or a limit | Add funds or use a card with room |

## India: card rules

Under the Reserve Bank of India's e-mandate rules, only cards that support recurring payments work for automatic billing. Meta asks for a INR 3 charge, which you confirm with a bank OTP, and refunds it. After that, it charges your card each time you reach your billing threshold, up to INR 5,000 or INR 15,000 per transaction. Your bank sends a notice at least 24 hours before each debit.

## A worked example

Say your card allows INR 5,000 per transaction, and your payment threshold is INR 10,000. When costs reach INR 10,000, the charge is declined every time. Ads pause. Meta says you can lower the threshold to match a card limit. Set it to INR 5,000 and each charge fits. Meta's [payment threshold page](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1342874532544030) says thresholds in India may vary because of the e-mandate rules (checked 2026-10-20).

## How to stop it happening again

- Add a backup payment method.
- Check card expiry dates.
- Keep enough balance near your monthly bill date.
- Use a card with a CVV code, since Meta accepts only cards with one.
- Confirm your bank has not restricted the card.
- For prepaid accounts, turn on auto reload.
