An ad account "disconnects" when the tool reading it loses permission, usually after a password change, expired access or a removed role. You want a message the moment it happens, because every report, alert and lead feed from that account stops until someone reconnects it.

## Why connections break

A tool such as a reporting app reads your Meta or Google Ads account through access that one person granted. When that access ends, the tool goes blind.

| Cause | What usually happened | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Password change | The person who connected the account changed their Facebook or Google password, which can end the access they granted | They reconnect the account in the tool |
| Access expired | The access ran out after a set time or a security check | Reconnect, then check it holds for a day |
| Role removed | The person left, or someone removed them from the ad account or business portfolio | Reconnect with a person who still has access |
| Permissions trimmed | During reconnecting, someone unticked a permission the tool needs | Reconnect and allow every permission asked |
| Account restricted | Meta limited the ad account itself | A different problem: see [ad account restricted](/glossary/ad-account-restricted) |

A failed card is also different. Ads stop, but the tool can still read the account. See [Meta ads payment failed](/guides/how-to-fix-meta-ads-payment-failed) for that one.

## Get the alert in Slack

We make Marxx. When an ad account needs reconnecting, Marxx posts an "Ad account connection problems" message to the client's Slack channel. This message is always on, so nobody can switch it off by mistake. You can send it to a different channel from the client's other messages.

Other tools differ, so check what yours does when it loses access: an email, a banner in the app, or nothing.

## Fix it in five steps

1. **Check which account broke.** The alert sits in the client's channel, so you know whose account it is.
2. **Find who connected it.** Ask whether they changed a password or left the team.
3. **Check their access.** In Meta Business settings or in Google Ads under Access and security, confirm they still have a role on the ad account.
4. **Reconnect in the tool.** Use an account owner or a long-term team member, not a freelancer on a short contract.
5. **Check the next morning.** Confirm reports and alerts have fresh numbers.

Marxx never posts leads older than 7 days, so reconnecting does not flood a client's channel with old leads.

## Stop it happening again

- Connect tools with a person who will stay, or a shared admin login your company controls.
- Give agencies access through the proper partner route, not a shared password. See [giving an agency access to your Meta ad account](/guides/how-to-give-an-agency-access-to-your-meta-ad-account).
- When someone leaves, list the tools they connected before you remove them.
- Send connection problems to a channel someone checks daily. A channel per client keeps it clear whose account broke, as in [setting up Slack for an ad agency](/guides/how-to-set-up-slack-for-an-ad-agency).

## FAQ

### Do my ads stop when a tool disconnects?

No. Your ads keep running in Meta or Google. Only the tool stops reading them, so you lose its reports and alerts.

### How do I know if a disconnect is my tool or Meta?

If Ads Manager shows the account as normal and running, the problem is the tool's access. If Ads Manager shows a restriction, the problem is with Meta.

### Can I turn off Marxx's connection problem message?

No. It is always on, because a silent disconnect also silences every other alert for that account.
