Set two spend alerts on Meta ads: one for spend with no results, and one that checks your month-to-date spend against budget. If you need a hard stop as well, add Meta's account spending limit, which pauses ads instead of warning you.

## Alert 1: spend with no results

This alert catches money going out with nothing coming back, such as a broken form, a paused website or a wrong conversion event.

Set it on ad sets, and fire when spend passes about 2 times your target cost per result with zero results.

Say your target cost per lead is INR 500. The alert fires when an ad set spends INR 1,000 in a day with no leads. If it spends INR 700 with no leads, it stays quiet, because that can happen on a normal day.

Check weekdays, when someone is around to act. Mark it High severity. The usual fixes are fast: test the form, check the website and look for a tracking change.

## Alert 2: monthly spend check

This alert catches pacing. Spending too fast runs the budget dry before the month ends. Spending too slowly leaves sales on the table.

## The formula

Expected spend by today = monthly budget x days passed / days in the month

## A worked example

Say Northwind Escapes has INR 3,00,000 for November, a 30-day month.

1. On 15 November, 15 days have passed.
2. Expected spend = INR 3,00,000 x 15 / 30 = INR 1,50,000.
3. Actual spend so far is INR 1,82,000.
4. Pace = INR 1,82,000 / INR 1,50,000 = 1.21, so spend is 21% ahead.

An alert set at 15% over or under fires here. At this pace the budget runs out around 25 November. Lower daily budgets now, or agree a top-up with the client. Our [ad budget template](/templates/ad-budget-template) helps plan the month.

## Spending limit vs spend alerts

Meta has its own control: the account spending limit, set in its billing and payment settings. It caps total spend for the whole ad account.

| | Account spending limit | Spend alerts |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Stops all ads in the account when total spend reaches the cap | Sends a message, ads keep running |
| Set in | Meta billing settings | Your alert tool |
| Level | Whole ad account | Ad set, campaign or account |
| Good for | A hard ceiling no one can pass by accident | Catching waste and pacing early |
| Risk | Every ad stops at once, even good ones | Someone has to read and act |

Use both. The limit is the seatbelt, the alerts are the dashboard warning lights. Set the limit a little above the budget, so the alerts fire first. For setting the budget itself, see [how to set a Facebook ads budget](/guides/how-to-set-a-facebook-ads-budget).

We make Marxx. Its alert list includes Spend with no results and a Monthly spend check, sent to the client's Slack channel or email. See [Meta ads alerts in Slack](/guides/how-to-set-up-meta-ads-alerts-in-slack).

## FAQ

### Does Meta send an alert when I reach my budget?

A campaign or ad set budget simply stops spending at its level. The account spending limit stops all ads when reached. For a warning before either, use alerts.

### What if my ads stop because of the spending limit?

Raise, reset or remove the limit in Meta's billing settings, and the ads can deliver again.

### Should spend alerts look at campaigns or ad sets?

Use ad sets for spend with no results, since one broken ad set can hide inside a healthy campaign. Use the whole account for the monthly check.
