To improve CTR on Facebook ads, change what people see in the first line or the first second, make the offer obvious, fit the creative to the placement and replace tired ads. Track link CTR, not CTR (all).

## First, read the right CTR

Meta defines CTR (link click-through rate) as link clicks divided by impressions. CTR (all) divides clicks of every kind by impressions, so it counts more than clicks on your link ([Meta: link CTR](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/877711998984611), [Meta: CTR (all)](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/928745330472862), checked 2026-10-20). For sales and leads, use link CTR. See [what CTR is](/glossary/ctr).

## 7 changes to test

1. **Test the opening.** Keep the ad the same and change only the first line of the copy, or the first second of the video. Try three. See [how to write ad hooks](/guides/how-to-write-ad-hooks).
2. **Put the offer first.** Meta suggests primary text of 1 to 3 lines, with the action you want clear at a glance. Its recommended lengths for most placements are 125 characters for primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description (Meta, [text in ads](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/223409425500940), checked 2026-10-20).
3. **Match the format to the placement.** Meta recommends 4:5 for single-image ads in Facebook Feed and 9:16 for Stories and Reels.
4. **Stay inside the safe zone.** On 9:16 ads, keep text and logos away from the edges so buttons and profile icons do not cover them.
5. **Use one call to action.** Make the button match the copy.
6. **Show the ad to the right people.** Check who the ad reaches and whether the copy speaks to them. A message that fits the audience earns more clicks.
7. **Replace tired ads.** If CTR falls week on week at steady spend, people have seen it too often. See [how to fix ad fatigue](/guides/how-to-fix-ad-fatigue).

You can also add Meta's ad relevance diagnostics, such as engagement rate ranking, to your columns. They need at least 500 impressions per ad and are not inputs to the ad auction (Meta, [diagnostics](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/403110480493160), checked 2026-10-20).

## A worked example

Say an ad gets 50,000 impressions for INR 10,000, a CPM of INR 200. It brings 450 link clicks.

- CTR = 450 / 50,000 x 100 = **0.9%**
- Cost per click = 10,000 / 450 = **INR 22**

You write a new opening and run it with the same spend and reach. It brings 675 clicks.

- CTR = 675 / 50,000 x 100 = **1.35%**
- Cost per click = 10,000 / 675 = **INR 15**

You pay the same and get 225 more visitors. If 2 in 100 visitors buy, that is 13.5 purchases instead of 9.

## Mistakes to avoid

- **Chasing clicks with a curiosity hook.** The wrong people click, and your cost per sale rises.
- **Changing five things at once.** You will not know what worked.
- **Judging on a few hundred impressions.** Wait for enough volume.
- **Ignoring the page after the click.** A high CTR on a slow page wastes spend.

Log each test in a [creative testing tracker](/templates/creative-testing-tracker-template).

We make Marxx. It reads your connected Meta ad account in full, with creative tagged by hook, angle, format and offer, so you can line up CTR against each. See [creative intelligence](/features/creative-intelligence).

## FAQ

### What is a good CTR on Facebook ads?

It depends on the objective, format and audience. Compare each ad with your own account over the last 90 days, split by format, instead of using one industry number.

### Should I optimise for CTR?

No. Use CTR to diagnose creative. Optimise for the result you pay for, such as purchases or leads, and check [hook rate](/glossary/hook-rate) for video.

### Does a higher CTR lower my costs?

Not by itself. More clicks on the same spend lower cost per click, but cost per sale depends on what happens after the click.
