To lower CPM on Facebook ads, make your ads more relevant to the people who see them, give Meta more room to find cheap impressions with a broader audience and Advantage+ placements, and rest tired ads. You cannot set CPM. You can only influence it, because [CPM](/glossary/cpm) is the price of 1,000 impressions in an auction.

## Why CPM moves

Meta says its auction picks the best ads for each impression using the ads' maximum bids and ad performance. All ads across Meta technologies compete. The bid that wins may be lower than your maximum (Meta, [ad auction](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/163066663757985), checked 2026-10-20). So your CPM rises when more advertisers want the same people, and falls when your ad is a better fit.

## Six ways to lower it

1. **Broaden the audience.** Meta says a very specific audience may cost more to reach. See [broad targeting](/glossary/broad-targeting).
2. **Use Advantage+ placements.** Meta calls them typically the most efficient use of budget, because the system can choose from the widest range of places.
3. **Combine similar ad sets.** Meta says this helps its delivery system work more efficiently.
4. **Make ads people like.** Meta says more relevant ads cost less and see more results. Quality ranking looks at feedback from people who view or hide the ad and at low-quality traits such as sensational language and engagement bait. Check the ranking columns in Ads Manager ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/403110480493160), [Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/303639570334185), checked 2026-10-20).
5. **Rest tired ads.** If the same people see your ad again and again, results fall. Watch [frequency](/glossary/frequency) and follow [how to fix ad fatigue](/guides/how-to-fix-ad-fatigue).
6. **Plan for busy weeks.** When many advertisers bid at once, as in festive weeks, expect higher prices. Start testing before the rush.

Meta's source for steps 1 to 3 is its page on [reducing cost per result](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/321695409726523) (checked 2026-10-20). It also says to let a campaign leave the learning phase before making changes.

## A worked example

Say you spend INR 12,000 and get 40,000 impressions.

**CPM = spend / impressions x 1,000 = 12,000 / 40,000 x 1,000 = INR 300**

You broaden the audience, turn on Advantage+ placements and add a new video. You spend INR 12,000 again and get 60,000 impressions. CPM is now INR 200. Check yours with the [CPM calculator](/cpm-calculator).

## A low CPM can still cost more

Say two placements show these numbers:

| Placement | CPM | Link CTR | Cost per click |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | INR 120 | 0.4% | INR 30 |
| B | INR 250 | 1.2% | INR 21 |

Cost per click = CPM / (1,000 x CTR). Placement A is half the price per view, yet each click costs more. Judge by cost per click, then cost per result.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Turning off a placement just because its CPM looks high
- Narrowing the audience to cut waste, which often raises CPM
- Judging CPM over one day
- Cutting a creative that brings buyers because its CPM is higher

## FAQ

### What is a good CPM on Facebook?

It depends on country, audience, format and season. Compare your own CPM across weeks and placements instead of using a single benchmark.

### Does a lower CPM mean lower CPA?

Not always. CPA also depends on CTR and on how many clickers buy. See [how to lower CPA on Meta ads](/guides/how-to-lower-cpa-on-meta-ads).

### Why is my CPM higher during sales?

More advertisers compete for the same people in the auction. Test early and keep fresh creative ready.
