Press **Mark contacted** on the lead's message in Slack, and Marxx moves that lead to its Contacted stage, the same as doing it in Marxx. The message then updates for everyone in the channel to show who did it, for example "✓ Contacted by Priya Shah".

## Before the button appears

Two things need to be true:

- **The ad account has a Contacted stage.** Marxx shows **Mark contacted** only when the lead's ad account has a stage called Contacted in its lead stages. If you have not set stages up, do that first in Marxx's [Leads feature](/features/leads).
- **Your Slack account is linked.** The first time you press any Marxx button, only you see a message with **Link your Slack account**. You confirm once in Marxx, and from then on buttons act as you.

## Step by step

1. Call or message the lead. Open the lead with **Open lead in Marxx** if contact details are hidden in Slack.
2. Go back to the lead's message in the client's Slack channel.
3. Press **Mark contacted**.
4. The message changes to "✓ Contacted by" and your name. Everyone in the channel sees the same update.
5. If you want to record what was said, press **Add note** on the same message.

In Marxx, the lead now sits at Contacted, exactly as if you had moved it there yourself.

## What happens in each case

| Situation | What Marxx does |
|---|---|
| Lead is at its first stage (New) | Moves it to Contacted and updates the message for everyone |
| Someone already moved it, say to Qualified | Says where it is, for example "This lead is already Qualified by Karan Mehta.", and changes nothing |
| The ad account has no Contacted stage | The button does not appear |
| You are from another company in a shared channel | You cannot use Marxx buttons |
| You cannot open this client in Marxx | Nothing changes. Marxx acts from Slack only for clients you can open in Marxx |

The "already moved" rule stops two people from undoing each other's work. Say Karan qualifies a lead in Marxx at 11:05. At 11:20 Priya, who missed that, presses **Mark contacted** in Slack. The lead stays at Qualified, and Priya sees who moved it.

## Why mark contacted from Slack

- **The channel shows who has it.** A message with "✓ Contacted by" tells the rest of the team to leave that lead alone.
- **Unmarked leads stand out.** Scroll the channel and any message without a tick is a lead nobody has marked from Slack. Check it in Marxx before you call.
- **Meta can hear about it too.** If Conversions API lead stages are set up in Marxx under **Leads -> CAPI events**, marking contacted in Slack sends the same update to Meta as doing it in Marxx. See [Conversions API](/glossary/conversions-api).

Fast first contact matters, which is why [speed to lead](/glossary/speed-to-lead) is worth measuring. We make Marxx, and the button is part of [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack).

## Common mistakes

- **Marking before you call.** Mark contacted when you have really reached out, or the channel shows false progress.
- **Expecting the button on later stages.** It only works while the lead is still at New. Move later stages in Marxx.
- **Clicking a stranger's link prompt.** Only continue with **Link your Slack account** if you pressed a Marxx button yourself.

## FAQ

### Why don't I see the Mark contacted button?

The button appears only when the lead's ad account has a Contacted stage. Add one to that account's lead stages in Marxx.

### Can I undo Mark contacted from Slack?

Not from Slack. Open the lead in Marxx and change its stage there.

### Does Mark contacted send anything to Meta?

Only if Conversions API lead stages are set up under **Leads -> CAPI events**. Then it sends the same update to Meta as doing it in Marxx.
