Set up Conversions API lead stages in Marxx under **Leads -> CAPI events**, and from then on pressing **Mark contacted** on a lead message in Slack sends the same stage update to Meta as doing it in Marxx. You set it up once, and your sales team never has to open Ads Manager.

## What a stage update is

A lead form tells Meta that someone filled in a form. It does not tell Meta what happened next. A stage update is a message your business sends back to Meta through the [Conversions API](/glossary/conversions-api), Meta's way of receiving events from your own systems rather than from a browser. It says, in effect, "this lead reached Contacted" or "this lead became a sale".

The [Pixel vs Conversions API](/compare/pixel-vs-conversions-api) page explains why lead events travel by server rather than by browser.

## Why stage signals matter

Say Northwind Escapes spends INR 60,000 on two ads and gets 150 leads:

| Ad | Leads | Cost per lead | Reached Contacted | Became bookings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goa beach reel | 100 | INR 300 | 40 | 2 |
| Kerala family carousel | 50 | INR 600 | 35 | 6 |

Judged by form fills alone, the Goa reel looks twice as good. Judged by what happened next, the Kerala carousel brought three times the bookings. Without stage updates, Meta only sees the first column. With them, your ad account also holds the later columns, so the people buying ads and Meta both see more than the form fill.

## Set it up in Marxx

1. In Marxx, open **Leads -> CAPI events** for the client.
2. Make sure the ad account has lead stages, including one called Contacted. If not, add them first in Marxx's [Leads feature](/features/leads).
3. Map each later stage, such as Contacted, Qualified and Won, to the event you want Meta to receive.
4. Leave the first stage, New, unmapped. Meta already counts the lead when the form is filled.
5. Make sure **New leads** goes to the client's Slack channel, under **Settings -> Integrations -> Slack -> Manage**, with **@Marxx** added to that channel.

For the wider Conversions API setup outside Marxx, see [how to set up Meta Conversions API](/guides/how-to-set-up-meta-conversions-api).

## What happens when someone presses Mark contacted

1. A lead arrives and Marxx posts it in the client's channel.
2. The caller reaches the lead and presses **Mark contacted** in Slack.
3. Marxx moves the lead to Contacted, as if done in Marxx, and the message updates to "✓ Contacted by" and their name.
4. Because CAPI lead stages are set up, Marxx sends the same update to Meta.

The button works only while the lead is at its first stage, New. Later stages, such as Qualified and Won, are moved in Marxx, and they reach Meta the same way once mapped. We make Marxx.

## Common mistakes

- **Mapping New to an event.** Meta already has the lead. Sending it again as a stage adds noise.
- **Pressing Mark contacted before the call.** Meta then hears about contacts that never happened.
- **Forgetting the other ad accounts.** The button looks for a Contacted stage on the lead's own ad account. Check every account that runs lead forms.

## FAQ

### Do I need a developer to send lead stages to Meta?

Not with a tool that does it for you. In Marxx you map stages under **Leads -> CAPI events**, and the updates go out when leads move.

### Does marking contacted in Slack send something different from Marxx?

No. Marking contacted in Slack sends the same update to Meta as doing it in Marxx.

### What if CAPI lead stages are not set up?

**Mark contacted** still moves the lead in Marxx and updates the Slack message. Nothing goes to Meta.
