To set a Facebook ads budget, multiply your target cost per sale by about 50, the results Meta looks for each week, then divide by 7 for a daily figure. Choose a daily budget for steady spend, or a lifetime budget for a fixed amount and dates.

## Daily or lifetime

| | Daily budget | Lifetime budget |
|---|---|---|
| What you set | A spending target per day | A total for the whole run |
| How Meta spends it | On average over a calendar week | Spread across the dates you choose |
| Use it when | You want steady daily results | You have a fixed amount and an end date |

Meta says a daily budget is a target over a week from Sunday to Saturday. Meta may spend up to 75% over it on a day with better chances, but never more than 175% of the daily budget in a day or 7 times the daily budget in a week ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/190490051321426), checked 2026-10-20). Meta also says you need a lifetime budget for anything scheduled to run for less than a day.

## Step by step

1. **Find your target cost per sale.** Start from what you earn per sale after costs, then set a target below it. See [CPA](/glossary/cpa).
2. **Multiply by 50.** Meta says an ad set usually leaves the [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase) after about 50 results in a week. That gives your weekly budget.
3. **Divide by 7.** That is the daily budget.
4. **Cannot afford it?** Optimise for an easier step. Meta's example is that purchases need more budget than landing page views ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/203183363050448), checked 2026-10-20).
5. **Check the cost goal rule.** If you set a cost per result goal, Meta says your daily budget should be at least 5 times that goal ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/203183363050448)).
6. **Choose the level.** Set the budget on the campaign with Advantage+ campaign budget, or on each ad set. See [CBO vs ABO](/compare/cbo-vs-abo).
7. **Change it carefully.** In Ads Manager, hover over the ad set or campaign, click **Edit**, change the budget and click **Publish**. Meta says it takes about 15 minutes to apply ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/196976447912140)). Frequent changes can send an ad set back into learning.

Meta shows an alert in Ads Manager if your budget is below its minimum. Minimums vary by country and objective.

## A worked example

Say you sell a INR 1,499 product. Profit per order is INR 700, so your break-even cost per purchase is INR 700. You set a target of INR 560. The numbers are made up.

- Weekly budget: 50 x INR 560 = INR 28,000
- Daily budget: INR 28,000 / 7 = INR 4,000

On a INR 4,000 daily budget, Meta may spend up to INR 7,000 on a day, and no more than INR 28,000 in the week.

Now say you can only spend INR 1,500 a day, or INR 10,500 a week. That buys about 19 purchases at INR 560, far from 50. So you optimise for add to cart. If an add to cart costs INR 140, INR 10,500 buys 75 of them. That is enough results to learn from.

Check the goal rule too. A INR 560 cost goal needs at least INR 2,800 a day, which is more than INR 1,500. So skip the cost goal and use lowest cost until you can afford it.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Setting a budget by feel, not from a cost per sale
- Spreading one small budget over many ad sets. See [how to build a creative testing budget](/guides/how-to-build-a-creative-testing-budget)
- Raising or cutting the budget every day
- Forgetting the daily limit. A day can run to 175% of what you set

A [simple budget template](/templates/ad-budget-template) helps you plan a month.

## FAQ

### What is the minimum budget for Facebook ads?

Meta says minimums vary by country and objective, and Ads Manager alerts you if you are below it. Meta's guidance is to give each ad set enough budget for its optimisation event.

### Should I use daily or lifetime budget?

Use daily for steady results. Use lifetime when you have a fixed amount and dates, as for a short sale.

### Why did Meta spend more than my daily budget?

Meta says it may spend up to 75% over your daily budget on days with better opportunities, but keeps the week to 7 times your daily budget.
