Set a high CPA alert at your target CPA plus a buffer, usually 30% to 50%, measured over the last 3 days and only for ad sets that spent enough to judge. If your target is INR 600, an alert at INR 900 over 3 days catches real trouble without firing on one bad day.

## The formula

High CPA threshold = target CPA x (1 + buffer)

[CPA](/glossary/cpa) is cost per acquisition: what you pay for one result, such as a lead or a sale. Ads Manager calls it cost per result. Your target CPA is the most you can pay and still make money.

The buffer stops the alert firing on normal swings. Meta's costs move day to day even when nothing is wrong.

## A worked example

Say Wanderlast Holidays sells Goa packages through lead ads. Its target cost per lead is INR 600.

1. **Pick a buffer.** 50%, because lead costs swing a lot.
2. **Work out the threshold.** INR 600 x 1.5 = INR 900.
3. **Pick a window.** Last 3 days.
4. **Set a minimum spend.** 3 x target = INR 1,800 in the window. Below that, one lead more or less changes the CPA too much.

Now check two ad sets over the last 3 days:

| Ad set | Spend | Leads | Cost per lead | Fires? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goa retargeting | INR 7,100 | 5 | INR 1,420 | Yes, INR 1,420 > INR 900 and spend over INR 1,800 |
| Goa lookalike | INR 1,200 | 1 | INR 1,200 | No, spend under INR 1,800 |

Goa retargeting is 58% over the threshold. That is worth a High severity alert today. Goa lookalike might be fine. One more lead would bring it to INR 600.

## Pick the window

| Window | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Today or yesterday | Large budgets that spend fast | Fires on normal daily swings |
| Last 3 days | Most accounts | Needs a minimum spend |
| Last 7 days | Small budgets, slow sales cycles | A bad week costs a week of spend before you hear |

Start with 3 days. Switch to 7 days if an ad set gets fewer than 2 results a day.

## When the alert fires

1. **Check for recent edits.** A budget or audience change can send the ad set back into the [learning phase](/glossary/learning-phase), and costs rise for a few days.
2. **Check tracking.** If leads still arrive in your CRM but Meta shows fewer, the problem is reporting, not cost.
3. **Check the ads.** Look for a falling CTR or rising frequency on the ads inside.
4. **Act or wait.** Pause the worst ad, cut the budget or snooze the alert while a fix settles.

Our guide to [lowering CPA on Meta ads](/guides/how-to-lower-cpa-on-meta-ads) has the fixes in detail.

We make Marxx. Its High CPA alert reads like "Cost per result 1,420 > 900 (last 3 days)" and posts to the client's Slack channel. See [Meta ads alerts in Slack](/guides/how-to-set-up-meta-ads-alerts-in-slack).

## FAQ

### Should I alert on CPA or on cost per result?

They are the same idea. Use whatever your ad tool calls the result you optimise for, such as cost per lead or cost per purchase.

### What buffer should I start with?

Start at 50% for leads and 30% for purchases at steady volume. Tighten it if the alert misses problems, widen it if it fires on normal days.

### Should a high CPA alert pause the ad set automatically?

Start with an alert only. A person can see causes a rule cannot, such as a tracking break or a planned test.
