To set up the Meta Conversions API, pick the easiest of three routes: a partner integration if your store runs on a platform such as Shopify or WooCommerce, Meta's one-click setup for web events, or a developer-built direct integration. Then send the same events as your pixel, with matching names and IDs, and test in Events Manager.

## The three routes

Meta compares them on its [setup options page](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/433493041367251) (checked 2026-10-20).

| Route | Time | Cost | You need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partner integration | Depends on the partner | Depends on the partner. Free for platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix and BigCommerce, Meta says | An account on a supported platform |
| Meta-enabled setup (web only) | One click | Free | A working Meta Pixel |
| Direct integration | 2 to 4 weeks for a new one | Developer time | A developer and a server that sends events in real time |

For app, offline or store events, Meta says direct integration is the only option today.

## Step by step

1. **Check you have a pixel.** Meta says you need a Pixel ID. Use the same pixel for browser and server events.
2. **Pick a route** from the table.
3. **Partner route.** In Events Manager, open **Data sources**, click **Settings**, scroll to **Choose a partner**, select yours and follow the steps ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/260370078559247)).
4. **Meta-enabled route.** Meta says this web-only setup creates a server-side connection alongside your pixel in one click. Events your pixel shares are also sent this way and are deduplicated automatically. Start from your pixel in Events Manager.
5. **Direct route.** In the pixel's **Settings** tab, generate an access token in the Conversions API section. Meta says you do not need App Review for this ([Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api/get-started)).
6. **Send the right events.** Send purchase, lead and add to cart, the same ones your pixel sends.
7. **Deduplicate.** Give each event the same `event_name` and `event_id` from the pixel and from the server. Meta matches on those two fields and generally keeps the first copy it receives, if both arrive within 48 hours ([Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api/deduplicate-pixel-and-server-events)).
8. **Test.** In Events Manager, open **Data sources**, pick your dataset and click **Test events**. Check **Diagnostics** for problems later.

Meta recommends using the pixel and the Conversions API together. See [pixel vs Conversions API](/compare/pixel-vs-conversions-api).

## A worked example

Say your store had 500 orders last week and spent INR 1,00,000 on Meta. The numbers are made up.

| | Pixel only | Pixel plus Conversions API |
|---|---|---|
| Orders Meta saw | 340 | 455 |
| Share of real orders | 68% | 91% |
| Reported cost per purchase | INR 294 | INR 220 |

The ads did not get cheaper. Meta is now counting sales it already caused. It also has more buyers to learn from.

## Mistakes to avoid

- **No event ID.** Orders can be counted twice, and your results look better than they are.
- **Different names for the same event.** Meta matches on the event name, so the pixel and the server must use the identical name.
- **Switching the pixel off.** Meta recommends running both.
- **Skipping consent.** Send customer details only where your privacy policy and consent allow it.
- **Never opening Diagnostics.**

Meta's numbers will still differ from your store and from Google Analytics. See [GA4 vs Meta Ads Manager numbers](/compare/ga4-vs-meta-ads-manager-numbers). For the Google side, see [how to set up Google Ads conversion tracking](/guides/how-to-set-up-google-ads-conversion-tracking).

## FAQ

### Do I need a developer?

Not for partner or Meta-enabled setups. Meta says commerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix and BigCommerce take just a few clicks. A direct integration needs a developer.

### Does the Conversions API replace the pixel?

No. Meta recommends using both. The pixel sends events from the browser. The Conversions API sends them from your server, and Meta removes the duplicates.

### What is the Conversions API?

It is a way for your server to tell Meta about sales and leads directly. Read [what is the Conversions API](/glossary/conversions-api).
