# How to stop old leads flooding Slack after a reconnect

> Reconnecting a Meta ad account can repost weeks of old leads to Slack. How Marxx's 7-day rule prevents that, and what to check in Zapier or your own setup.

Marxx never posts a lead older than 7 days to Slack, so reconnecting an ad account does not flood your channel with old leads. If you use Zapier, Make or your own code instead, test a reconnect on a quiet channel first, because each tool treats old records its own way.

## Why old leads flood a channel

A lead alert is meant to say "someone just filled your form, call now". A flood happens when a tool sees a batch of leads it has not posted yet and posts them all at once. That can happen when:

- an ad account was disconnected for a while and comes back
- you connect a new tool to a form that already holds leads
- an automation was paused and is switched back on

The result is a channel full of week-old leads that look new. Callers dial people who filled the form ten days ago, and the real new leads sink below them.

## How Marxx handles it

- **The 7-day rule.** Leads older than 7 days are never posted, so reconnecting an ad account does not flood the channel. Older leads stay in Marxx only.
- **The rush cap.** Even within 7 days, Marxx posts up to 20 lead messages per client every 10 minutes. Every lead is still in Marxx.
- **Existing clients start quiet.** If you connected Slack before the 6 Nov 2026 update, **New leads**, the competitor and keyword new-ads digests and weekly sector trends stay off for existing clients until you switch them on.
- **Connection problems are always on.** Marxx tells you in Slack when an ad account needs to be reconnected, so a gap does not last for weeks unnoticed.

We make Marxx. The [Marxx in Slack page](/features/slack) lists every message it can send.

## Worked example

Say Northwind Escapes' Meta ad account lost its connection on 1 November, and Karan Mehta reconnects it on 12 November at 10 am. During the gap, 77 people filled the form.

| Leads received | Count | Posted to Slack? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov to 4 Nov | 46 | No. Older than 7 days |
| 5 Nov to 12 Nov | 31 | Can be posted, within the 20-per-10-minutes cap |
| All 77 | 77 | Check the Leads page in Marxx once the account is back |

The 46 older leads never reach Slack, so your team has to go and find them. Nobody has called them. They need a different message from a fresh lead: "Sorry for the delay, are you still planning your trip?"

## If you use Zapier, Make or your own code

Check these before you reconnect anything:

1. **Turn the automation off** while you fix the connection.
2. **Point it at a test channel** such as `#leads-test` for the first run.
3. **Switch it back on and watch.** If old leads pour in, you know how this tool behaves.
4. **Filter by time.** Most automation tools let you add a filter step that skips records older than a set time. Use the lead's created time.
5. **Point it back at the real channel** once only new leads arrive.

Slack lets an app post about one message per second per channel, so even a flood arrives over minutes, not instantly. That is enough time to notice and pause it.

## Common mistakes

- **Treating a reconnect as a fresh start.** The leads from the gap still need calls. Work them from the full list.
- **Deleting the flood without reading it.** Old leads in Slack are still real people. Move them to a follow-up list before you clean up.
- **Switching on every message type at once for an existing client.** Turn on **New leads** first, check the channel, then add digests.

## FAQ

### Is it safe to reconnect a Meta ad account in Marxx?

Yes, as far as Slack goes. Leads older than 7 days are never posted, so the channel does not flood.

### Will I lose the leads from the days it was disconnected?

Leads older than 7 days are not posted to Slack, so look for them on the Leads page in Marxx, with Meta's Leads Center as a backstop. Call the oldest first.

### Why did nothing post after I connected Slack for an existing client?

For clients that existed before the update, **New leads** stays off until you switch it on under **What goes to Slack**.
